Cheteshwar Pujara Eclipses Gautam Gambhir’s Record Of Most Test Runs In A Season By An Indian

Indian batting mainstay Cheteshwar Pujara has eclipsed former teammate Gautam Gambhir’s eight-year-old record of most Test runs registered in a season by an Indian batsman to add another feather to his cap.

While playing 151-ball 57-run hard-fought knock, the Saurashtra star brought up his 15th Test fifty, after going past the opening batsman Gambhir’s record of 1,269 runs which he registered in the 2008-09 season. Pujara has scored 1316 runs this season with 1 innings to go.

In 2008-09 season, from 09 October 2008 to April 3 2009, Gambhir set the record at an average of 84.60 in 8 Tests which was further spread over 16 innings. The left-handed batsman Gambhir had smashed five hundreds and four fifties in the season.

Rajkot-born Pujara had played a significant role for India throughout the season as he has delivered well in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar series where he has scored 6, 31, 17, 92, 202 and 57 in the first innings of the Test series decider at Dharamsala on day two.

However, the right-handed Pujara has also become the second all-time most run scorer in a season after former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting. The legendary batsman had registered 1,482 runs in the 2005-06 season.

Earlier, in the 2005-06 season, the former Aussie explosive opening batsman Matthew Hayden amassed 1,287 runs.

Having the bucket-load of runs on his back, Pujara scored 83 and unbeaten 53 against Bangladesh in a One-off Test.

In three Tests against New Zealand, Pujara scored 373 runs which included three fifties and a splendid century.

Against England, Pujara was remarkable with the bat as he smashed two hundreds and a solitary fifty as he amassed 401 runs in the five-match series.

In 13 Tests which is spread over 22 innings, Pujara amassed 1,316 runs at an average of 65.80 which included four hundreds and eight fifties.

Apart from Pujara, Kohli was also in the contention to eclipse past Gambhir’s record but he had low string of scores (46) against Australia. He had so far scored 1,252 runs in 12 Tests at an average of 65.89 to see himself a run behind West Indies legendary batsman Brian Lara (1253), who is fifth on the overall list of most run scorers in a single season.

Here’s the list of ten players from India who had scored most runs in a season:
