CoA Head Vinod Rai Meets Virat Kohli To Talk About Pay Concerns

After reports suggesting that some of the senior Indian players were unhappy with the newly revised payment structure emerged,  the head of the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA), Vinod Rai, met captain Virat Kohli to listen to the concerns.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), last month, doubled the annual retainer fee for all contracted players to 2 crore, 1 crore and 50 lakh respectively for the three graded categories A, B and C. There had been no changes to India’s retainer contracts since 2010 before the decision was taken on March 22. However, the players were reportedly unhappy that they were getting paid far less than their counterparts from other countries like Australia and England.

And to address the issue Rai along with fellow member of the CoA Vikram Limaye met the Indian captain and some other players on Wednesday (April 5) in Hyderabad, where the tenth edition of the Indian Premier League kicked off. Rai said the meeting was a ‘fruitful one’ before stating that his panel would not involve any intermediary between the board and the players.

“Let me make it clear at the very onset that any issue pertaining to players’ interest will be addressed with utmost seriousness. We will not leave any stone unturned in this regard. But the COA will directly deal with players and does not need any intermediaries,” Rai told PTI.

“We met Virat and a few other players and it was a very fruitful discussion with them. We have already asked chief coach Anil Kumble to make a presentation. In fact, Virat also spoke about the presentation,” Rai said.

It is believed that India coach Anil Kumble made a presentation to the four-member panel earlier this month, proposing a new pay structure for the players and the support staff. When asked whether his panel is mulling on implementing Kumble’s proposed model, Rai said it was too early to talk about it but said that the players’ interest would be the utmost priority.

“That I can’t tell you right now but like we doubled the retainers fee for the 2016-17, we would certainly work on it again. The player’s interest will be kept in mind,” he said.
