Coach Should Be Someone With Whom The Captain Can Have An Harmonious Relationship, Ian Chappell

The Story

Former Australia skipper Ian Chappell has given his views on the Virat Kohli – Anil Kumble rift that led to the publicised controversy a few weeks ago. The India cricketing fraternity was divided into different opinions after Anil Kumble resigned from his head coach’s position just after the conclusion of the Champions Trophy final in London.

Kumble cited untenable relation with Kohli as the reason for his decision to move on from the duty. His parting letter, which was posted on twitter, later on, created further debates as a cluster of the fans and experts heavily criticised the Indian skipper for his attitude.

Kohli did not comment anything about the issue.

Chappell Supports Kohli

While a majority of the fans and critics slammed Kohli for his alleged ‘lack of respect,” Kohli has received some backing over the time with few refusing to take sides and backing the Indian skipper as he happens to be the individual who runs the team.

Chappell also has resonated similar views and has backed India skipper Virat Kohli in the controversy that erupted after his fallout with Anil Kumble

In his column for ‘ESPNcricinfo’, Chappell played down the role of a coach in any team. “Kohli didn’t have the same harmonious relationship with Anil Kumble that he enjoyed with Ravi Shastri when he was cricket director,” he said.

“The fact that India have now reverted to Shastri as coach prompts the question: ‘Why change something that isn’t broken?’,” he asked. “If a coach is to be inflicted on a captain then at least it should be someone with whom he’s comfortable,” he added.

Controversy dead and buried

The controversy is now a thing of past as the BCCI and the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) has finally appointed Ravi Shastri, the former team director, as the new head coach of the Indian team.

The new coach-captain pair have already flown off for their first assignment which is the overseas tour of Sri Lanka.
