Confirmed: Virender Sehwag Applies For Team India Coach’s Post

Former India opening batsman Virender Sehwag is one of the six applicants who has applied for Team India’s coach post. With current head coach Anil Kumble’s contract expiring after the conclusion of the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), on last Thursday (May 25), invited applications for the post.
Apart from Sehwag, other Indians who have applied for the coveted job are Lalchand Rajput and former pacer Doda Ganesh. Anil Kumble is an automatic entry into the process. There are also two overseas applicants in the fray- former Sri Lanka coach Tom Moody and former Pakistan coach Richard Pybus.
The new coach will be selected in a similar process that saw Kumble leaving behind other competitors to land the coaching job last year. After the applicants apply for the post, they will be reviewed by the board’s three-member panel, the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), comprising Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman. The trio will conduct interviews and seek presentations before selecting the next coach. The entire process, meanwhile, will be overseen by BCCI CEO Rahul Johri.
Kumble’s highly successful stint with the Indian Team, meanwhile, has been embroiled in controversy at the fag end of his contract. The bowling legend is reportedly not on good terms on skipper Virat Kohli and reports are suggesting that he is unlikely to coach the team after his contract ends.
Meanwhile, Sehwag applying for the post has made things interesting. Earlier reports had suggested that BCCI officials had approached the former swashbuckling opener to apply for the chief coach’s post. However, Sehwag had later dismissed the rumour but now that he has applied for the post, it is very much clear that he is in the scheme of things of the cricket board.
Sehwag has no coaching experience at the international stage but the way Kumble has enjoyed great success with the team so far despite becoming coach of an international team for the time, the BCCI might get tempted to appoint another Indian.
