Could have played for 1-2 more years – Tillakaratne Dilshan

Sri Lankan opener Tillakaratne Dilshan, who retired from ODI’s after the third game of the five-match series against Australia at Dambulla, mentioned that he could have easily played on for 1 or 2 more years. Dilshan, who remains an undoubted legend of Sri Lankan cricket with over 10,000 career ODI runs, bid adieu to ODI’s after the third ODI. With just two T20I games remaining in his career, the opener will retire from international cricket altogether.

After the third ODI, Dilshan was quizzed about his decision to retire. The right-hander mentioned that with the 2019 World Cup less than three years away, it would have given the team very little time to prepare for the event, had he retired later.

“I hadn’t planned to retire, before the series,” Dilshan said. “Whether someone tells me to keep playing or stop playing, that’s not what’s important. What is important is what I feel. I started the series thinking that I’ll play for another year – at least in T20 cricket. But when I woke up on the 25th I felt that it was time to go.”

“To be honest, I could easily play for another year or two. But we have to look to the future. If I play for another two years and leave, there’re only 18 months before the next World Cup and that’s unfair to the team. A young player could be blooded in that time. Since I started opening six years ago, we haven’t found a permanent partner for me,” the opener further added.

Dilshan pointed out a concerning aspect for Sri Lanka, as he said that the team would have to work out on the right opening combination. “To be honest, I could easily play for another year or two. But we have to look to the future. If I play for another two years and leave, there’re only 18 months before the next World Cup and that’s unfair to the team. A young player could be blooded in that time. Since I started opening six years ago, we haven’t found a permanent partner for me,” said Dilshan.
