CPL Match 1: St Lucia Stars v Trinbago Knight Riders: Trinbago Begin on a Resounding Note

The Caribbean Premier League got under way yesterday with the 1st match being played between S Lucia Stars and the Trinbago Knight Riders at Gros Islet. It was a thoroughly professional performance by the Trinbago Knight Riders as they crushed St Lucia by 9 wickets and with nearly 10 overs to spare.

Batting first the St Lucia Stars could get never get going and lost wickets at regular intervals. There wasn’t a single big partnership which didn’t allow St Lucia to break free. Pakistan leggie Shadab Khan was the pick of the Trinbago bowlers as the youngster finished with exceptional figures of 2/15 in 4 overs. He bowled in the perfect areas and the opposition batsmen failed to counter him. It was a great effort by the debutant in CPL.

All-rounder Dwayne Bravo gave him good support and bagged two prized wickets which derailed their progress. Eventually, they finished their allotted 20 overs on 132/9. Andre Fletcher was the top scorer with a sedate 26. Chasing a modest target Brendon McCullum came out to start proceedings with pinch hitter Sunil Narine who proved his worth as an opening batsman during the IPL.

Jerome Taylor removed Narine in the very first ball he faced with a brilliant delivery. Brendon McCullum was joined by another Kiwis star Colin Munro. The left-hand right-hand combination worked wonders for them as the duo started belting g the listless bowlers all around Gros Islet. There was no stopping Baz and Munro as they were going hammers and tongs on a consistent basis.

McCullum kept stepping down the track to both pacers and spinners and consistently smashed them out of the park. His unbeaten knock of 58 came in a mere 27 deliveries, an innings which was laced with 2 fours and 7 sixes. Munro, on the other hand, was one step ahead as the southpaw remained unbeaten on 66 of 39 deliveries. The stylish left hander played delightful stroke en route to his 66, His innings was constructed with 7 fours and 3 hits over the fence. For St Lucia Stars, Taylor was the sole wicket taker.
