West Indies defeated Sri Lanka by 7 wickets in their second group match of the ICC World T20 2016 played at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. It was a dominate performance by the West Indies bowlers and then the batsmen completed the job. West Indies now top the group with 4 points.

  1. Outstanding spell by Samuel Badree

West Indies won the toss and choose to bowl. Samuel Badree was given the ball by Sammy in the second over of the innings and was impressive giving away just 6 runs. In his next three over’s he just gave away 6 runs and picked 3 important wickets of Thirimanne, Kapugedra and Siriwardne. He bowled tight line and lengths which did not give the Sri Lankan batsmen to score runs with ease. Samuel Badree completed his four over’s spell in the 9th over and just put consistent pressure on the Sri Lankan batsmen.

  1. Poor batting by Sri Lankan middle order

Sri Lankan openers Dilshan and Chandimal scored 13 runs in the very first over. After that, Dilshan was given the wrong decision. Apart from that Chandimal was run out for 16, Thirmane played a poor stroke of Badree’s bowling was dismissed for 5. Kapugedra and Siriwaredne also played poor strokes to leave Sri Lanka in big trouble at 49 for 5. Sri Lankan batsmen needed to give the team a good start to put pressure on the West Indies bowlers which they were unable to do.  It was important for the Sri Lankan middle order to contribute.

  1. Thisara Perera 38 only resistance for Sri Lanka

Thisara Perera came to the crease when Sri Lanka was struggling 49 for 5 in the 9th over. Perera took the time to settle and tried to revive the Sri Lankan innings. In the 14th over Perera hit a boundary off Russell and then another boundary of Benn. In the next few over’s he smashed 3 fours and six. He played some excellent shots and was the only Sri Lankan batsmen to provide some resistance. He was dismissed in the 20th over for well-made 40 off 29 balls to give Sri Lanka a modest total of 122.

  1. Fletcher doing the job of Gayle

Chasing a target of 123, Gayle did not come to bat because of a hamstring injury. Fletcher started the innings off to a great start taking on the Sri Lankan spinners. He made the batting look easy and smashed Sri Lankan bowlers to all parts of the ground. His innings of 84 off 64 balls helped West Indies to achieve a second successive win of the ICC World T20 and also was named the man of the match. When the pressure was on Flecther hit a boundary or six to release pressure from Sri Lankan spinners.

  1. Poor fielding by Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka fielding in today’s match was pathetic. In the 4th over Charles was dropped by Kapudegdra. Defending such a small total they had to field well and bowl. Sri Lankan fielders ground fielding was also not up to the mark. They dropped another catch in the 18th when Kulaskera dropped a sitter of Russell. They need to improve their ground fielding if they have to progress to semi-finals. They bowled 4 wide balls.
