For the cricket fans of Punjab and followers of the gentleman’s game in nutshell here in India, as the new international cricket stadium is under construction at Togan village in Chandigarh which would have world class drainage system, followed by seven pitches that would also feature three red-soil turfs, as the Wankhade Stadium one in Mumbai has on an offer.
Given to the significance of the newly-laid stadium, just after 30 minutes of rain, the ground would be fit for the game, as per the plans which have been chalked out for the sub-surface drainage system.
It has been estimated that the project of the three-tier stadium will cost nearly INR 150 crore.
“The new stadium will have a players’ pavilion like the ones at Lords in England and Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, where players will walk to the playing area through the stairs and fans will be able to see and cheer them from close quarters,” Honorary Project Director of the stadium said D K Bassi was quoted as saying by Indian Express.
The work started recently on a ground in Mullanpur which would further witness parking area while having the capacity to make a space for 1,600 cars, whereas, the four-to-six floodlights (illuminated by 2,200 lux) will be erected as compared to 18 light towers of Inderjit Singh (IS) Bindra Stadium in Mohali.
It becomes pertinent that the idea was floated in 2011 by the then Punjab Cricket Association President IS Bindra.
Interestingly, Bassi revealed they are working on the ground alongside the work on the different buildings at the new International Stadium in the state of Punjab.
“Normally, the building area is made first but this is for the first time that we have started preparing the ground and pitches along with the building area,” Bassi revealed.
As the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) is expecting to host international stadium at the new venue in 2020, the officials are now looking to complete the project in 2019-20, as the construction is based on 38.2 acres of land which has started in January this year.
“Players and fans have memories of the players sitting in the pavilion area of the IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali. We expect to complete the stadium in 2019-2020 and it will be ready to host international matches at the start of 2020,” Bassi said.
The reports revealed that the commercial pavilion would have the capacity of 6,000 seats, as Players’ Pavilion will have 12,000 seats which further includes a South Pavilion.
“The stadium will have a cricket academy for trainees and other affiliated members of ICC. There will be eight ramp towers for easier access to the ground,” PCA’s Chief Administrator Officer G S Sandhu said.
The rooftop would be comprised of solar panels which will supply 250 KV of electricity, according to stadium’s project director Bassi, as dressing room would accommodate at least 28 members than 18 at the IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali.
