South Africa’s cricket governing body CSA congratulated their players AB de Villiers, Hashim Amla and Imran Tahir for earning their place in ICC’s ODI team of the year for 2015.
“Congratulations to AB, Hashim and Imran on their selection to the ICC ODI team,” said CSA chief executive, Haroon Lorgat.
“They continue to make the nation proud and AB deserves a special mention for what he has achieved over the past year both as a player and as a leader. He is truly a global icon of the game and I have no doubt that his selection will be cheered the world over,” he added.
While being inducted in the playing XI for the 4th time in the past 5 years, AB de Villiers debuted as the ODI captain according to this year’s listings. The unfortunate year which excluded him was 2012. It was Hashim Amla’s 2nd bout as a player with the previous one being 2013 while fellow teammate Imran Tahir made his debut this time.
Even though South Africa reigns the Test rankings, not even a single player featured in ICC Test team of the year. The explanation being, ICC selects players largely on the basis of statistics. South Africa played just five matches under the review period from September 18, 2014 to September 13, 2015 and therefore their players’ skills and performances could not match those from other countries who comparatively played more matches.
Even from those matches, two of them against the Bangladeshi team were badly affected due to rains with the South African side playing just three matches, against the West Indies.
Both De Villiers and Amla averaged more than 100 in that series while Dale Steyn took 13 wickets at 22/15. Despite this achievement, the lack of games brings to an end a remarkable sequence by Steyn stretching back to 2008 when he was first named in the ICC Test team and continued to be selected for a record seven years in a row.
