Cricket on the verge of Commonwealth Games return

International Cricket Council have submitted an application for women’s cricket to be included in the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

ICC have been quite confident that women’s cricket will be included in the 2022 edition of the Games, which will be held in Durban, South Africa.

However, the game’s governing body yet to specify whether the plans included Twenty20 or one-day cricket, but initial reports suggest the battle for Commonwealth gold would be fought over 20 overs format, as the shortest format of the game is now believed to be the key to growing women’s cricket.

Women’s World T20 tournament comes in every two years with the 2022 edition scheduled to be held in South Africa. The Women’s Big Bash League proved a massive hit in Australia last summer along with the latest Women’s Super League in England will begin later this month.

“The Board has taken a strategic decision to support the inclusion of women’s cricket in the 2022 Commonwealth Games as it will enhance the profile of the sport and create additional exposure and experiences for female cricketers, as well as opportunities to engage with the Commonwealth Games on important social justice issues and initiatives,” ICC chairman Shashank Manohar said.

Cricket was last seen in Commonwealth Games back in 1998 in Malaysia, when the men’s event was won by South Africa, who defeated Australia in the final.

Matches that time were played over 50 overs, with 16 teams participating including seven of the nine Test nations at that time.

Australia entered the tournament with a strong squad captained by Steve Waugh alongside brother Mark, Adam Gilchrist, Ricky Ponting, Damien Fleming and Darren Lehmann, while the Caribbean islands chose to compete as separate nations and England didn’t send a team at all.

The ICC has also confirmed discussions also take place later in the year on cricket’s potential participation at the Olympic Games.

On Saturday, the president of the Italian cricket board claimed cricket might be inducted in 2024 Olympics if Rome wins the hosting rights.

Italian cricket board chief Simone Gambino’s comments came during the ongoing ICC Annual Conference in Edinburgh.

“If Rome hosts the Olympics, cricket will be included.

Rome is bidding to host the 2024 Summer Games alongside Paris, Los Angeles, and Budapest. The host city will have the clearance to include five sports to the Olympics if they fall under the regulations.

If Rome eventually hosts the Games, the most probable location for cricket would be Bologna, where World Cricket League Division Four matches were held in 2010.
