Karachi, Aug 11 (IANS) Social media was flooded with tributes to legendary Pakistan batsman Hanif Mohammad (81), who passed away at a hospital here on Thursday.

The legend suffered from lung cancer for which he underwent surgery in London in 2013. He was shifted to the ventilator at the Aga Khan Hospital here a couple of days ago after his health deteriorated after being hospitalised three weeks ago due to breathing problems.

Many Pakistani and international stars took to Twitter to express their condolences.

Soon after the news of his demise spread, International Cricket Council (ICC) tweeted: “ICC expresses sadness at the passing of Hall of Famer Hanif Mohammad”.

ICC CEO David Richardson also tweeted: “Hanif took batting to great heights and many batsmen drew inspiration from him.”

Indian batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar remembered the times of meeting Hanif and said: “The cricketing legend #HanifMohammad was always positive and supportive. Have fond memories of meeting him in 2005. RIP”

Former Pakistan captain Waqar Younis also took to the social networking site to express his condolences: “We lost our #Hero #HanifMohammad today. May ALLAH rest his soul in peace. Sir, you will always stay in our hearts. We will miss you dearly.”

Pacer Wasim Akram said: “Rest in peace Little Master. The legendary batsmen Hanif Mohammad will be missed but never forgotten. My love to Shoaib and family at this time”

Rawalpindi express Shoaib Akhtar wrote: “Devastated on losing Hanif Mohammed saab. The art of batting today lost its top craftsman. RIP Sir”

Born in Junagadh, Hanif still holds the record for the highest score (337) in an innings by a Pakistani batsman, followed by Inzamamul Haq (329) and Younus Khan (313). He was also named Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1968.

The 81-year-old Hanif was named in the ICC’s Hall of Fame in the inaugural batch of 55 inductees along with Imran Khan and Javed Miandad.
