One of the most successful franchises in the Indian Premier League, the Chennai Super Kings is all set to make a return after serving a two-year suspension due to involvement in betting by their owners. It will be an interesting thing to see whether the franchise gets a chance to retain their core group which they had before the team was suspended for the 2016 and the 2017 editions.
The Director of Chennai Super Kings, George John made their intentions pretty clear that they will like to retain their core group and talks with the BCCI regarding the same is going on.
“Talks with BCCI about player retention is going on. We hope to have drafted similar to the one in 2016. Since we are the highest-paid franchise among the two, we will get to pick first. So that is an advantage if it happens,” said George John.
“Talks are going on with the core group that we had two years back. If we get them back, it will definitely have a continuity and that is what we always look to achieve as a franchise,” he further added. CSK and Rajasthan Royals were suspended from the tournament in 2015 after allegations against Gurunarth Meiyappan and Raj Kundra who were closely associated with the two franchises.
After it was confirmed that CSK will return to IPL in 2018, talks have been going around whether they will retain MS Dhoni. While the former Indian captain won’t mind being back in the yellow colors after two off seasons with the Rising Pune Supergiant, it is still not a certainty that we will see Dhoni in yellow jersey again.
However, the CSK team management has said that if the draft system takes place and CSK gets their pick they have hinted in picking Dhoni ahead of the rest. With the next IPL still many months away, the speculation of the future of the franchise and Dhoni will remain a hot topic of discussion in the coming months.
