CWC’15: Day 8, Statistical Highlights

  • The Day 8 of the ICC World Cup 2015 witnessed two matches. In the first one, Sri Lanka defeated Afghanistan by 4 wickets at Dunedin and in the second, India annihilated South Africa by 130 runs at Melbourne. During both matches, some key stats and records came into notice. So, let us take a look at them in detail:  

    -> 130 Runs South Africa lost the match by- their first defeat by a margin of over 100 runs in World Cup

    -> This was India’s first win against South Africa in World Cup. They had lost to them on the previous three occasions in 1992, 1999 and 2011. 

    -> 137 Runs scored by Shikhar Dhawan– the highest individual score against South Africa in World Cup. Previous best was by former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming in 2003 World Cup (134*) at Johannesburg. 

    -> 85 Runs conceded by Wayne Parnell– the most by a South African bowler in a World Cup match, beating Shaun Pollock’s 83 runs against Australia in 2007. 

    -> Afghanistan pacer Hamad Hassan became the quickest from the associate teams to take 50 ODI wickets in 26 matches. Previous best was by former Netherlands’ all-rounder Ryan ten Doeschate in 28 matches. 

    -> Mahela Jayawardene became the 4th Sri Lankan to cross the 1000-run mark in World Cup

    -> This was the first time in World Cup and second in ODIs that both openers from the same team (Tillakaratne Dilshan and Lahiru Thirimanne, Sri Lanka v Afghanistan) were out for a golden duck

    -> 177– South Africa recorded their 4th lowest total in World Cup

    -> India have never lost any of their last 7 ODIs in which Dhawan has scored a hundred

    -> 131.66 Ajinkya Rahane’s strike-rate in his innings of 79- the best by a number four batsman against South Africa in a World Cup innings of 50 or more.
