A Caribbean Select XI will lock horns against a Trinidad side in Port of Spain on 14th October to raise funds for the victims of the recent hurricanes which shook the Caribbean Islands leaving everyone in a desperate condition. Former Windies skipper Darren Sammy and two-time Twenty20 World Cup-winning captain Darren Sammy will be taking charge of the Caribbean Select XI while all-rounder Kieron Pollard will be leading the Trinidad side.
It will be a charity-themed match for ‘Rebuilding the Caribbean one over at a time’. Besides the gains from the ticket sales which cost $100, each container will be placed all over the ground to collect clothing and canned items for the affected victims. The move is in continuation to the fundraising efforts which took place during the ODI series between England and West Indies.
Former Windies fast bowler and a current member of the WIndies team management, Joel Garner could be seen taking the collection buckets around the crowd which will be gathered for the game. As per reports, it is learnt that all the members who will be participating in the match have contributed in some way or the other.
Two category hurricanes severely struck the Caribbean Islands on five occasions namely Irma and Maria. The former has been the most powerful recorded in Atlantic since 2005 among the other hurricanes which have wrecked havoc all through August and September.
It was a devastating condition for the majority of the Islands and such was the level of devastation especially in Dominica, Barbuda and St. Martin that communication with some of the communities was challenging. Off-Spinner Shane Shillingford who made debut for the national team during the infamous farewell series of Sachin Tendulkar was very recently found. He went missing for some time following the hurricanes and is understood to be in good health.
