Former Worcestershire skipper Daryl Mitchell has been announced as the new chairman of the Professional Cricketers’ Association in England.
The 33-year-old right-handed batsman Mitchell replaces Glamorgan’s wicket-keeper batsman Mark Wallace, who stepped down from the post while serving for four years.
“It’s a big role and a big honour, and I’m looking forward to the challenges ahead,” said Mitchell to English media.
“It’s a prestigious role and it has been done very well in recent years by Vikram Solanki, who I know from his time at Worcestershire and then Mark Wallace, who has done a fantastic job over the last four years,” Mitchell added.
Wallace retired on February 10 before Mitchell was assigned the job for the first two years.
The other contestants who had participated in the 50th anniversary season of the PCA were Durham fast-bowler Graham Onions, all-rounder Steven Crook from Northamptonshire, Paul Horton (Leicestershire) and James Hildreth (Somerset).
“It was pretty competitive and there were some really good lads who went for it, so to be elected by your peers from other clubs is very pleasing,” Mitchell added.
Mitchell is now the 14th Chairman of the PCA since its inception in 1967. In the late quarter of 2016 English season, Mitchell was succeeded by Joe Leach as Worcestershire skipper.
“I have been involved with the PCA as a county representative since 2009 so I have had a heavy involvement so I know about the fantastic work that they do. I have enjoyed being involved as a representative so this is the next step really,” Mitchell concluded.
The other 10 cricketers who had being appointed as the PCA’s chairman were Dougie Brown (2007-09), Martyn Ball (2003-07), Matthew Fleming (1996 -2003), Geoff Cook (1984-89), Chris Balderston (1980-84), David Brown (1975-80), Peter Walker (1973-75) Mike Edwards (1970-73), Jack Bannister (1968-70) and Roger Prodeaux (1967-68).
The Badsey-born Mitchell has played 164 first-class matches in which he has amassed 10,284 at an average of 39.40.
Mitchell has smashed 24 hundreds and 44 fifties. He has bagged 22 wickets in the first-class competition.
