  1. Hat-trick of World Cups:

On this day back in 2007, Australia made history that will take a long time to repeat itself. They managed to maul Sri Lanka over in the final of the World Cup at Barbados.

Adam Gilchrist, the fiery opener scored 149 off just 104 balls lifting Australia to 281/4 in the 38 stipulated overs after rain played spoilsport. The sub-continent outfit tried their best at the start of the second innings but fell 53 runs short of the target and handed Australia their 3rd consecutive World Cup after the victories in 1999 and 2003.

It was not a great day for the administration of the tournament in the Caribbean and will always be remembered for the last few overs that were played in almost complete darkness.

  1. Birthday – Andy Flower:

With an average of more than 50 in a 63-match test career, Andy Flower is one of the best players to come out of Zimbabwe in recent times.

In his prime, Andy flower scored 1466 runs at the unbelievable average of 133.27 in 11 games between November 2000 and 2001 and played one of the best Test knocks ever in this time. His 142 and 199 not out against South Africa at Harare is still remembered as one of the most extraordinary test innings’ ever.

He went on to coach the England national team for 5 years in which he took the team to an Ashes victory at home and also their first ICC trophy, the WorldT20 in 2010.  He also took England to the top of the Test rankings to top off a great job with the Three Lions.

  1. Landmark for the Windies:

In 1984, Jamaica, Clive Lloyd, one of the most successful captains ever in the history of the sport played a landmark 100th Test match on this day.

This game incidentally was the 100th game to be played in the Caribbean and the home side went into the game with an unassailable 2-0 lead in the 5 match tournament. Lloyd could not mark the day with a big innings as he walked back for just 20 runs in the first innings but the West Indies managed to breeze past Australia and won the game with all 10 wickets to spare.

This is a historic moment not only for the skipper but also for the whole nation holding its 100th Test match.

  1. India finds a gem:

Way back in 1983, team India travelled to Antigua for the 5th Test match in the series against West Indies which the home side led 2-0 going into this game.

India were not able to get the better of their opposition in the last 4 tests and decided to bring in a mysterious spinner in Laxman Sivaramakrishnan. The wily leg-spinner had a good start to the game with 17 runs to his name in the first innings coming in to bat at number 10. However, he was not able to pick even a single wicket up and only cemented his place in the national side two years later after a breakthrough series against England.

With this debut, Siva became the youngest non-Pakistani player to play test cricket at a time at 17 years and 118 days.

  1. Viv Richards’ first failure:

Arguably one of the greatest players to have ever played the game, Sir Vivian Richards was one of the most consistent batsmen of all time.

His batting average over a period of 17 years was around the 50 mark and at his time, there were bowlers who were scared to run up to him. Back in 1991 in the 5th test of Australia’s tour of West Indies, Viv Richards, for the first time in his career, went back to the pavilion without scoring a run. This was something that never happened before and the 2 runs he scored in the second innings made sure it never happened again.

In spite of this series, Viv Richards averages 61 runs every innings in his own backyard.
