Deodhar Trophy 2016/17: Tamil Nadu Cruise To Final With An Easy Win Over India A

Tamil Nadu cruised to the final of the Deodhar Trophy 2016/17 with a handsome 73 runs win over India A in the crucial must-win fixture at the VDCA Stadium, Vizag. Tamil Nadu, led by in-form batsmen Narayan Jagadeesan and Dinesh Karthik, displayed appreciable batting performance to register 303 for six after electing to bat first the all-important game.

India A, in response, failed to show any intent, despite the presence of a star-studded lineup, as a collective bowling effort from left arm spinners Rahil Shah and Sai Kishore saw Tamil Nadu restrict the ‘A’ side for just 230.

A major credit for the win goes to the Jagadeesan – Karthik duo who seized control of the proceedings after a shaky start. After winning the toss and electing to bat first, TN saw itself standing at the loss of two wickets in a short span of time.

Openers Kaushik Gandhi and Sridhar Raju got off to a steady start, before the batting side was jolted by the double blow from fast bowler Shardul Thakur, who snapped both the openers in space of three deliveries as Tamil Nadu went down to 51/2 after being 47/ no loss.

However, India A could not manage to leverage the early advantage, as Karthik and Jagadeesan stitched a 159-runs partnership for the third wicket. Their counter-attacking approach did put TN in a strong position and a three hundred plus total looked like a good possibility.

The bowling side found the opening when Krunal Pandya, the left arm spinner, broke the thriving stand in the 37th over with the wicket of Jagadeesan.  Shortly, Karthik, who was heading towards his 26th FC century was made to walk back to the pavilion by Shardul Thakur in the 41st over.

TN went on lose Vijay Shankar and M. Mohammad, later on, to go down by six wickets. However, before things could get more worse, some late hits from Baba Indrajit (36 from just 28 balls) enabled TN to finally go past the three hundred mark and end the first innings on a high.

India A’s chase never took off except for the time when Krunal Pandya and Mandeep Singh were together for the 3rd wicket. The 72-runs stand between them brought India A back in the contest, after the failure of Mayank Agarwal and Ambati Rayudu in the top order.

But once, Pandya departed in the 25th over, the batting side began to crumble. Mandeep Singh (97 from 114 balls) looked like the only batsman who was making some legitimate effort to win the game.

Brief Scores:

Tamil Nadu: (Dinesh Karthik 93; Shardul Thakur 3/49)

India A: 230 in 44.4 overs (Mandeep Singh 97; Rahil Shah 3/39)
