With Shikhar Dhawan having a nightmarish time with the bat in the ongoing first test against South Africa but former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar came in support of the opener saying going by his record the left-hander deserves another chance.

Shikhar Dhawan has been struggling for runs of late and was dismissed for ducks in both innings of the Mohali test.

Gavaskar said about wheater Dhawan should be given a break he said it is a tough call but when you look at his test record in the previous two test matches he got a hundred.

He struggled in the ODI’s and then got a half century in the final ODI and he said he deserves another test because once again if you leave him you have two right-handers at the crease.  I would certainly want to give Dhawan another chance.

Gavaskar said going by the way the pitch is behaving anything close to 300 would be a winning score for India. He said ideally anything close to 300 but the way pitch is behaving and the ball is turning anything close to 200 would be also good enough. But I think closer to 300 would be pretty difficult for the South Africans to chase.

India has earned a 17 runs lead in the first innings due to R Ashwin impressive figures of 5-51. He has words of advice for Indian spinners. On this surface, it was exactly what the team wanted. They have got the kind of wicket they wanted it was no surprise at all that Indian spinners took all 10 wickets.

He wanted the Indian spinners to keep doing the same and pitch the ball further and you will probably get South Africa out less than what you got them out in the first innings.
