The 23-year-old Indian left-arm pacer Barinder Sran once wanted to be the boxer, but at the age of 18, he quit the game and fall in love of the game of bat and ball.
He started his career a bit late, but now determined to be the India’s most reliable fast bowler. He has impressed Indian fans with his swing. Sran said, MS Dhoni’s guidance behind the wickets helped him to prosper.
The Indian team has never got genuine left arm pacer after Zaheer Khan and Ashish Nehra’s who career ruined by injuries.
Sran with his good run up and clean action could be India’s answer to the bowling problem.
Sran, who has taken six wickets in the T20 series of Zimbabwe with the best figure of 4 for 10 and four wickets haul in three matches, said, “Dhoni taught me how to bowl according to the field placement. He kept talking from behind and told me how to bowl at which batsman which really helped.”
Though the BCCI has sent a second string team to Zimbabwe, the young team played as a unit and defeated Zimbabwe’s experienced side under the captaincy of MS Dhoni.
“Initially, my confidence was low. I thought I wasn’t able to perform to my potential. But from the second ODI, the ball started swinging well, I could exploit the conditions which helped me plan better,” he adds.
In the ODI series India have defeated Zimbabwe 3-0 and in the T2I Zimbabwe go down to from a chance to win the series.
“Being a young team, there was a lot of unity. We all were together – both in the dressing room and on the field – and people helped each other when required,” says Sran.
The Punjab bowler will now tour Australia with India ‘A’ for a quadrangular series in August. He will get the assistance of India A coach Rahul Dravid.
Sran also said that he will like to talk to India’s new coach Anil Kumble when he earns a berth in the main team of India.
“If I get to play under him, it will be a great opportunity for he has been a successful bowler for India. It will be brilliant if I can learn a few tricks from him. He will understand bowlers better. I have only had a formal introduction to him in the past,” he adds.
Currently, Sran is busy with his preparation for the Australia tour.
“I go to the ground every morning, work out in the gym during the evenings and then, I also take time out to play volleyball and soccer. I want to perfect the movement of the new ball, I am not too happy with it right now, the ball needs to be pitched in the right area so that it goes in smoothly,” says Sran, who made his debut earlier this year against Australia.
Sran has already shown how to held his nerve in pressure situations. He was bowling last over of the final match of T20I series which India have won by three runs.
