Ricky Ponting and MS Dhoni, both are great players in cricket. They have brought plenty privileges for their country. Ponting has retired from International cricket. But, Dhoni is playing for India. Though, he has retired from test cricket. Dhoni is captain of team India in ODI and T-20 format. Ricky Ponting is an excellent batsman, extraordinary fielder, and a wise captain.MS Dhoni is a good batsman, extra-ordinary keeper, and a wise captain. You can not compare between Dhoni and Ponting as a batsman. Ponting bats at No 3 while Dhoni bats at No 6. Ponting has faced more deliveries than Dhoni. But, We can compare them as a captain.
India’s most successful captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni played 324 international matches in Indian jersey as captain. MS Dhoni equalled Ricky Ponting’s record for the most matches played as an international captain.
MS Dhoni took ODI captaincy from Rahul Dravid in 2007. As a captain, Dhoni won his first bilateral series in Sri Lanka and New Zealand. Under his captaincy, India went on to win the inaugural ICC World T20 World Cup in 2007 and the 2011 ICC World Cup. He won Champions Trophy in 2013 and marked his name as the first captain to win all three ICC limited-overs trophies.
He holds the record as the first Indian captain to win 100 ODI matches as well as captaining the side for 300 international matches. Adding to his, he is the only captain to have led his side in 50 or more matches in each of the formats. Dhoni played 194 ODI matches as a captain. He won 107 matches of them and lost 72 matches. His winning percentage is 59.56.

Ricky Ponting showed aggressive and bold captaincy during his tenure. He his debut as captain in 2002. Ponting won his first series as captain against South Africa down-under. In his first stint as World Cup captain in 2003, Ponting led the Aussies to a stunning title victory, grabbing the cup while remaining unbeaten throughout the tournament. In Champions Trophy in 2006, Australia beat India to claim the trophy under Ponting for the first time.
In 2007, Ponting brought home the World Cup to Australia, thus completing a hat-trick of World Cup victories Ponting retired in 2013 from all formats. He played 229 ODI matches as captain. He won 164 out of 229 and lost 51.
