After a brilliant 2016 IPL, things have suddenly started looking way too bleak for the Kolkata Knight Riders. A thrashing by the Gujarat Lions in Kanpur was the last thing Gautam Gambhir and his boys needed as they need to win their remaining game at all odds against the Sunrisers Hyderabad. To compound their woes, Knight Riders’ net run rate has taken a hit too.
The hosts won the toss and put the Knight Riders into bat. After Gambhir was run out yet again, it was time for the part timer Dwayne Smith to wreck havoc on the Knight Riders. In his spell of gentle medium pace bowling, Smith clinched 4 crucial wickets to derail the Knight Riders innings. Smith conceded just 8 runs in 4 overs and struck 4 times. The formality was done and dusted as the Lions chased down the target with more than 6 overs to spare.
Post his side’s loss, Gambhir admitted that it was a total batting failure from the Knight Riders. “I thought the intensity was down and we didn’t bat properly. Never got the momentum. Always difficult to defend a total like that. We were looking at somewhere around 150, but losing wickets will always put pressure on the middle order. We lost wickets in clutters and it is harsh to expect so much from the middle order,” said Gambhir.
Ending on a little optimistic note, Gambhir added, “It’s just one of those bad days where nothing worked for us. But, we still have one more game and we gotta show what we’ve got. We don’t want to keep thinking about the other results, just concentrate on what works for us.”
Man of the Match Dwayne Smith said that he would have liked to score a few more runs in the middle. “I wait until skipper gives me the ball. I’m still disappointed, but I would have liked some runs against my name. I always back myself and it came off today. I haven’t bowled for a while and it’s up to the captains to decide when I would be useful. Hope we can get over the line and qualify for the play-offs,” Smith said.
