‘Disappointed’ Aaron Finch Feels There Was Lot To Learn From The Series Loss

Australia ended their New Zealand tour on a demoralising note after hosts New Zealand claimed the Chappell – Hadlee trophy with a 24 run win in the third ODI at Seddon Park, Hamilton. Australia’s stand-in skipper Aaron Finch was obviously disappointed but felt that they still had a lot to learn from the match.

“It is disappointing obviously to lose. We played some good cricket in patches over the last couple of games but unfortunately couldn’t just put together all up in one game,” Finch said. “I think to sum it up, we can learn a lot from our performances. We obviously had some inexperience in the side but at the end of the day, we come here to win, we didn’t, so it’s disappointing.”

The hosts, after opting to bat first, posted a challenging 281/9 on the scoreboard with the help of a century from Ross Taylor. The right-hander, who recently was on the sidelines due to an eye trouble registered his 32nd ODI fifty and ended up making 107. Australia fancied a chance but could never get going as left-arm fast bowler Trent Boult dismantled their batting order with a 6 wicket haul.

Travis Head (53 runs) and Marcus Stoinis (42 runs) were the only names who could resist the New Zealand pace attack and kept Australia’s chances in the chase alive before Boult wiped out the tail-enders and finished the match.

“You always hold hopes that you can steal one at the end but when you have got guys like (Trent) Boult and (Tim) Southee and (Lockie) Ferguson, and these guys who are executing quite well under pressure, it always makes it hard when the lower order batsmen are in,” the skipper added. “So it is the top order that needs to take responsibility – myself and Travis Head, in particular, getting fifties and getting out. It is disappointing but still some very good lessons to learn from the two games.”

The loss also meant that they lost two crucial points in the ODI rankings. At present Australia sits at the top of the ODI charts. However, if South Africa win their remaining two matches against Sri Lanka, they will overtake to become the top-ranked team.

“You obviously want to stay number one as long as you can, and really push that to the Champions Trophy and make sure when we go, everyone is hunting us. Being current World Cup champions, that is going to happen anyway, but there is a real chance here to go here with a lot of momentum and probably give the selectors a real headache for 20 guys to pick for that Champions Trophy series,” Aaron Finch said.

He also felt that the series has revealed some good players to them – one of them being seam bowling all-rounder Marcus Stoinis – who was astonishing in the series overall.

“Guys who like Marcus Stoinis have come in, it is a fantastic opportunity for them to play international cricket against a world class side in New Zealand. It’s giving guys like that probably a couple of extra games, and he has done exceptionally well. He has shown glimpses for a long time now, and I think in the last 12 months, his game is really taking off,” Finch said.

“I think the belief that he has in himself is as much a part of it, as batting and bowling itself. He is just a fantastic guy, someone like you would love saying, ‘Do well’, and the way that he played, 146 and looked like he was shaping up to do it again today. It was disappointing for him and he is a super talent, he bats, bowls and fields very well, he is someone who can have a huge future in international cricket at all levels,” he added.

Boult also received praises from Finch for his bowling effort. Finchy analysed his bowing and appreciated his ability to bowl in-swingers perfectly.

“Fantastic. 6 for 30, 29, 31 [6 for 33], something like that. He is a world class bowler, he challenges you both sides of the bat as a right-hander. And on that wicket, someone holding up and just sort of going away with the angle and seam. He has obviously got the ability to bowl beautiful in swing, he’s always attacking, you would love to have one of them on your side every time,” Finch said with a lot of regard for the left-arm pacer.

“We are lucky to have Mitchell Starc. Just the point of difference, someone who can get players who are in, out and could knock over new batters at any stage, that’s a huge asset to have. It was an unbelievable performance from Trent today,” Finch said.
