The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), on Friday, named Alun Powell as the Talent Manager of the national team.
Following the pathway and framework to nurture budding talents, the ECB made a review to appoint Powell as the talent manager at Loughborough, where ECB’s National Cricket Performance Centre is located.
“We want to help our best young cricketers maximise their potential – and become the England and county cricketers of the future. So it’s vital that we continue to invest in this area and attract new young talent into the professional game,” ECB’s Director, England Cricket Andrew Strauss was quoted as saying by ECB.co.uk.
According to the report, Powell’s role in the men’s cricket team will also include the identification of talent at the regional level.
“Alun’s work in professional rugby has been widely admired and he has a proven track record of implementing successful talent development programmes with local partners. His expertise will be invaluable to us as we look to develop and improve our existing county network, draw on best practice from other sports and deliver to a consistently high standard in all areas,” Strauss said.
Powell, who is currently the chief of the Rugby Football Union for regional academies in England, has also played an important role in the talent development for Scottish Rugby which further includes Wasps RFC, the professional English union rugby side.
However, in his new stint – Powell will be supported by the ECB’s National Performance Manager David Graveney, who is also monitoring the university and school cricket to help players in finding the right platform to showcase their talent.
“I’m also pleased to confirm that David Graveney will continue in his current role; helping shape and influence the development of our most promising young players and allowing them to benefit from all his extensive experience and knowledge of the First Class game,” Strauss concluded.
