ENG vs WI 2017: We Wanted to Make West Indies Suffer by Keeping them on the Field – Moeen Ali

The Story

Moeen Ali and seam bowling all-rounder Chris Woakes pushed West Indies to the corner with the help of their rapid eighth-wicket stand of 117 in the last session on day 4.

Ali was the leading man, hitting 84 off just 93 balls featuring 14 fours while Woakes played the supportive knock of an unbeaten 61. It was a slightly unforeseen effort from the duo who came in together when England was in a spot of bother, sitting at 327/7 batting in reply to West Indies’ first innings total of 417.

Thanks to their stand, England captain Joe Root was able to declare the second innings on 8-490 and set an imposing target of 322 to win.

Stunning Comeback

West Indies ended the day with five without loss and are currently in the chase, making it clear that the contest is now heading to a potential nail biting affair.

“We felt like their heads went down pretty quickly after tea,” left-handed batsman Ali told reporters. “We were trying to go up five runs at a time and keep going, keep burying them almost, make them suffer in terms of keeping them out in the field,” the usually mild-mannered all-rounder added.

West Indies can blame their discipline for the huge target which they are now expected to chase. Ali, however, was gifted a life on 32 when he was caught behind off a Devendra Bishoo no-ball.

“These things happen, people make mistakes, and you just carry on”, Ali said.

The knocks from Ali and Woakes added to two more fifties to England scorecard, as opener Mark Stoneman, Root, Dawid Malan and Ben Stokes had all reached the landmark earlier on but none of them managing to convert it to a hundred.

“I feel with the team we have and the strength we have, we were capable of being in this position,” said Ali.
