England’s ODI team lost in the first round of the ICC World Cup 2015 to Bangladesh. The team did not have ODI specialist who could play big strokes. After their exit in the first round in World Cup 2015, the England management made changes to their squad and the results are showing. In the ODI series against New Zealand last year, Jason Roy and Alex Hales came to open the innings. They changed the mindset of England team and played attacking cricket. In the first ODI, they scored 400 runs which showed that England team can beat any team in the world.
Joe Root one of the best batsmen in the world at the present moment has been the backbone of England batting order has been impressive with bat, England captain Morgan has been impressive with the bat. Jos Buttler who comes in the middle order has the ability to change the course of the game with his powerhitting. They have all-rounders in the form of Ben Stokes, Moeen Ali, Adil Rashid who can bat well. In the lone T20 match against New Zealand, England won the match.
They won the home series against New Zealand 3-2. At home against Australia, they really played well but lost the series 2-3.
They went to UAE to play against Pakistan. Despite losing the test series 0-2, they came back strongly in the ODI series to win the series 3-1. They have good bowling line up comprising of Woakes, Jordan, Willey. In the T20 series against Pakistan, England team whitewashed Pakistan 3-0.
England then toured South Africa. England won the test series 2-1. In the ODI series against South Africa, England scored 399 runs in the first match with Jos Buttler scoring a century. England won the first two matches but South Africa came back strongly to win the series 3-2. In the T20 series, South Africa won the series 2-0.
In the ICC World Cup 2016, England played attacking brand of cricket in the whole tournament with contributions from all players. Alex Hales, Jason Roy, Joe Root, Buttler, Stokes played important roles. In the first group match against South Africa, South Africa scored 229 runs; in reply, with contributions from Jason Roy, Hales, Root, England chased down the target with 2 wickets to spare.
They lost only match one match in the group stage to West Indies. After that England continued to show their class despite struggling in the matches against Afghanistan. In the semi finals against New Zealand , the England bowlers restricted New Zealand to a modest total and then chased down the target.
In the final against West Indies, England played well with the match going neck to neck. In the final over Ben Stokes conceded 4 sixes in an over and West Indies won the World Cup for the second time.
In the 2016 season, England defeated Sri Lanka in the test series. In the ODI series, England were struggling in the first match but contributions from Buttler and Woakes made sure England tied the match. In the rest of matches, England dominated Sri Lanka and won the shorter format series with ease.
Against Pakistan, England drew the test series 2-2. In the 50 over format, England have been dominating. In the 3rd ODI, England scored the highest total in ODI cricket. They scored 444 for 3 in 50 overs with Hales scoring 171, Buttler also scoring quickfire 80+ runs.
England has a good depth in One day internationals at the present moment. They have good openers, a good middle order who can give other top nations in the world a tough time. And the bowling also looks solid. With the ICC Champions trophy coming up next year in England, England cricket team would be a tough team to beat in their own den.
Alex Hales and Jason Roy have given England quick fire starts to the team which has led England success in shorter formats. Buttler is one of the dangerous batsmen in the world at the present moment and has the ability to change the course of the game with his powerhitting.
