England Vs South Africa 2017: ‘We Lost A Couple Of Wickets At The Bad Time,’ AB De Villiers Responds On South Africa’s Choke

Old habits die hard! There is no better organisation than the South African cricket team to explain this quote. The side, guilty of squandering several easy matches, did just that against England in the all-important second ODI of the series to gift England the series. By the courtesy of the heist for England, Eoin Morgan’s men just didn’t register a morale-boosting win before the ICC Champions Trophy at home, but also sealed the three-match series by 2-0, with a game left now at Lord’s.

Batting first, England were rocked early and the middle order ensured a slow but a smooth recovery. Once things looked settled, Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler went berserk in the last 10 overs as England once again crossed the 330-run barrier. In the last 11 instances of England batting first, the side has scaled down 300 in all games.

South Africa responded in style and was in control of the chase before a massive choke from Chris Morris resulted in England stealing the game. Needing 7 off the last over, South Africa ended up losing the game by 2 runs, as the series was gone too.

Post the loss, skipper AB de Villiers termed the outing as an unfortunate instance.

“I think the boys played very well,” de Villiers said. “It’s unfortunate but proud of the way we fought. We lost a couple of wickets at the bad time, else it could have been a lot easier. The guys played with a lot of freedom. The fielding was a little bit costly. It was faulty thinking if anything, but we had a good chase and unfortunately didn’t cross the line. Behardien got stuck and could not get going. The trick is to minimise the damage in the last few overs and we didn’t do that; that was the damage. Hopefully, we can win the last game and take the confidence into CT.”

“You learn a lot more from these games,” said England captain Eoin Morgan. “The game got away from us a lot more in this game. The tournament will be pretty tight, so these games are good for us. This helps us prepare well. We are always trying to improve. At the end, Wood held the yorkers well. I think today summarises our team. The batting conditions in the morning were difficult. And Stokes hitting form is good news for us.”

Ben Stokes was named the Man of the Match for his century, and all rounder carried on his brilliant run ever since his stint in the IPL.

“It shows what a bit of pace on the ball can do,” Stokes said about the bowling. You want to be in these situations and to defend 7 with Miller and Morris out there was brilliant. It’s just the bowling that is affected by the knee. Hopefully, it will be okay in a couple of days. It’s always nice hitting the ball well with good form behind you. Jos hit the ball well too. I hope to continue this form in the Champions Trophy.”
