Play resumed with Sri lanka scoring 415 runs with 3 wickets remaining, and Mathews still there for Sri Lanka. Anderson started the bowling attack with Mathews on strike and only two runs came from the first over. Stuart Board bowled from the other end and his first over was a maiden. England was expecting to take three wickets in the first session of the days play. But Mathews had other ideas and was hitting boundaries with ease. After 130th over Sri Lanka put on board 429 runs with Mathews on 91.
In 131st over Herath was bowled by Anderson for just two runs and next came Eranga. Sri Lankan innings was crumbling but Mathews was still on the crease. In the 135th over Mathews brought up his century with a boundary. It was a crackling innings by Mathews. But in the next over Mathews was dismissed by Plunkett. It was a lbw shout and Mathews asked for review but he was adjudged out. Mathews innings ended with Sri Lanka still trailing by 130 runs. Pradeep took the crease and the game continued with England requiring only one more wicket to end Sri Lankan innings. In the 139th over Pradeep makes a fun of himself by demolishing his own stump and thus Sri Lankan innings end at 453 runs trailing by 122 runs.
England lead by 122 runs and were expecting to put as much on board giving Sri Lanka tough times in the last day. Cook and Robson took the crease, with Robson on strike and Kulasekara on the bowling end. First over produce only a run and on other end Pradeep took the ball and gave a maiden in his first over. Both the openers was playing well, hitting boundaries at regular interval and after five overs England were 23 for no loss. After the 9th over it was lunch and England went in as the happier of the two teams. Next session would be an important session for both the teams.
After Lunch Eranga and Kulasekara was given the duty of bowling but Cook was hitting boundaries at ease. But in the 14th over Eranga dismissed Cook with a wonderful delivery. Cook nicks it to the keeper and he walks away while umpire was undecided whether or not it was out or not. Balance came onto bat with England 46 for 1. In the 16th over Eranga got another break through for Sri Lanka by dismissing Robson. Robson nicks onto off stump, a full length delivery and Bell comes to bat. Eranga was turning the heat on as he again dismissed Bell for just 9 runs in the 20th over. Again it was a full delivery and Bell nicks it onto off stump. Eranga was bowling a dream spell, in his eight overs he gave 11 runs and took 3 wickets. Previous innings hero Joe Root took the strike on Bell’s dismissal. At drinks Sri Lanka was sensing that something could be done of this test match.
Previous match hero could not stay for long as Joe Root was dismissed by Herath. It was a simple lbw decision and Root had to return with 98 runs on board. In the 29th over Sri Lanka enjoyed another success when Herath dismissed Moeen Ali. Moeen Ali was clean bowled by a great delivery from Herath. At tea England were 113 for 5 and Sri Lanka was taking grab of each session they were playing. After tea Sri Lanka got another success when Kulasekara dismissed by Prior. Prior gave a straight catch to gully. Play continued and the two batsmen on the crease was safeguarding the England innings. At the end of 50 overs England were 167 for 6. Balance brought up his fifty in the 54th over. In the 60th over Herath dismissed Jordan and 7 wickets were down for England. Board was playing well until the 67th over when he was dismissed by Herath caught and bowled. In the 69th over Ballance brought up his century with a six and it was a great innings under pressure. England ended fouth days play with a score of 267 for 8. So England handled the situation well and let’s see what happens in the last day of the first test match.
