In a watershed moment, Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), on Monday (September 18), created history be appointing a female as an official. The cricket association roped in Priyanka Thorave as its treasurer.
This is the first instance of a female taking a dominant position in any state body. In fact, not even in the BCCI, a woman has never been a senior office-bearer.
The decision, nevertheless, seems to have been prompted from the recommendation of the Supreme Court appointed-Committee of Administrators. The Vinod Rai-led panel had recommended the appointment of at least two women representatives in the governing body of the state units.
Abhay Apte, who will continue as MCA president, insisted that Priyanka was appointed purely on her merits. Priyanka will replace former treasurer Vikas Kakatkar who stepped down from the post citing health reasons.
“This is perhaps the first time in the history of BCCI that a woman office-bearer has been elected. Priyanka represents one of the founder clubs, the Club of Maharashtra, here and her appointment was unanimous in the general body of MCA. Everyone supported her candidature and she rightly deserves to be in cricket administration,” Apte told The Times of India.
Priyanka was also delighted to become a part of the history. The 30-year old, who is a management professional, was previously working with a big e-retail multinational and was associated with cricket administration for last four years.
“I am overwhelmed by the support of the MCA members.I hope to give it my best shot and hopefully I can prove my worth in the association. I am looking forward to working for the game,” Priyanka said, whose father Balasaheb Thorave was earlier an MCA official.
“I played cricket during my childhood days but now I follow the game passionately,” she added.
Priyanka also insisted that outgoing MCA president Ajay Shirke did not oppose her appointment.
