Five Indian Players Who Have Staked Claim For Champions Trophy 2017

Champions Trophy set to begin on 01 June 2017, only a week after the conclusion of the 10th edition of the Indian premier League.

The selectors would need to get their think-tank in order to get the right set of players into the squad, so as to optimise India’s chances of retaining the trophy.

Here, we look at the list of 5 players on whom the selection committee should spare a thought when they give a final call on announcing the team.

1. Manish Pandey:  The 27-year-old from Uttarakhand made his ODI debut against Zimbabwe. He has represented India in 12 ODIs so far, with a career best of 104 against the Aussies in their own backyard in Sydney in January 2016 which helped India to avoid the whitewash.

Besides, he has been a regular member of Kolkata franchise in the Indian premier league, and a consistent performer in the middle order. In the 2017 edition, so far, Pandey has scored 290 runs in the 5 matches the team has played so far, with a best of 81 against the Mumbai Indians. His 69 of 49 against Delhi Daredevils in their 5th match in Feroz Shah Kotla helped his side go over the line.

He has been prolific with the bat in the domestic circuit as well, bagging 882 runs in the 2009-10 season of Ranji Trophy which included 4 centuries. He was also the second highest run-getter for Karnataka in 2013-14. His unbeaten 99 runs against Mumbai helped Karnataka book a spot in the semi-finals of the recently concluded Vijay-Hazare Trophy.

2. Dinesh Karthik: Karthik has been a regular member of the Indian national side, both in Tests and ODIs before the entry of MS Dhoni into the international circuit. Karthik suffered a form slump in late-2007 and was dropped from the Test team, and since then has only made sporadic international appearances, although he continues to score heavily in domestic cricket.

He has been in sublime form throughout the domestic season of 2016-17, scoring a total of 854 runs, combining the Vijay Hazare Trophy and the Deodhar Trophy, 4th most by a cricketer in domestic circuit in a season in India.

Riding on Karthik’s splendid performance Tamil Nadu went on to clinch the Vijay Hazare and the Deodhar Trophy.

He has been with Gujarat Lions since 2016 for the Indian premier league and has proved his mettle there as well.

The selectors should take into consideration his current form across all the league’s he has been playing when they take a final call on the team selection.

3. Rishabh Pant: The 20-year-old from Uttarakhand came into limelight when he scored almost run a ball triple century (308 of 326) for Delhi against Maharashtra following a blistering 48 ball 100 against Jharkhand. This earned him the India cap and he made his debut in the 3rd T20 encounter against England at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru in January 2017.

Besides, being a talented batting prodigy, Pant has displayed enough character off the field, as days before the IPL started his father passed away and after completing his father’s last rites, he took to his team Delhi Daredevils who were all set to play Royal Challenger’s Bengaluru in their home.

His 57 of 36 almost took Delhi over the line. The match not only displayed how good a player he is but also the mental strength along with the intent and character he posses.

With his attacking style of batting, he has the ability to take on any bowling attack and score some quick fire runs which can come out to be quite handy and who knows if it could also decide the fate of the match too.

4. Kedar Jadhav: Kedar Jadhav stole the show when he scored a record-breaking 327 against Uttar Pradesh in the 2012-13 season of Ranji Trophy.

In the 2013-14 season, he scored a total of 1223 runs helping Maharashtra clinch the Ranji trophy first since 1992-93.

Jadhav made his international debut against Sri Lanka in Ranchi in November 2014 and got his maiden ODI century against Zimbabwe, scoring 105 of 87. His 200 run partnership with Virat Kohli helped India chase down a mammoth 351 runs at MCA Stadium, Pune after India lost 4 wickets in quick succession’s and were at a spot of bother. He scored 120 of 76 balls, taking the English balling attack all over the park.

Jadhav not only has the ability to score runs at a quick pace but also possess the quality of staying for a long time at the crease thereby increasing the fear factor in the opposition camp. Besides, he has the ability to don the gloves, as he does for his IPL franchise which could be a great boost taking into account any kind of injury considerations for MS Dhoni. Along with this, he can twist his fingers and roll through a couple of over’s in the middle if the situation demands so.

5. Jasprit Bumrah: His unorthodox bowling action and the ability to deliver yorkers at will has seen him transit into one of the key death bowler’s for India. He made his international debut in 2016 against Australia, Down under and he was very impressive from the beginning. Even MS Dhoni quoted him the, ‘find of the series’.

He continued his impressive run ahead in the Sri Lanka series picking up 11 wickets in 3 matches. In the Asia Cup, which was played in a T20 format he picked up 5 wickets in the 6 matches with a miserly economy of 5.16. In the T20 world cup which was played in India last year, Bumrah picked up wickets in each of the matches he played.
In August 2016, he surpassed the record of Dirk Nannes, picking up most wickets in T20’s in a single calendar (28 wickets).

Besides his international career, he has fought his way in the Ranji trophy as well. His 6 for 29 in the second innings helped Gujarat to book a spot in the Ranji Final, of the 2016-17 season.
