Five Likely Coaching Options For Team India

Amidst the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 underway in the UK, back home in India, there are several issues plaguing the BCCI. One of those major issues, is surrounding the selection of the appropriate candidates to take over as the head coach of Team India in the near future. Current coach Anil Kumble’s contract comes to an end post the tournament, and the side will be eager to hire someone of great repute as the head coach.

The last few weeks to top it all, have been marred by reports of a rift between Anil Kumble and Virat Kohli. This has added a lot of attention towards the issue of the next coach and thereby, like 2016, the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) comprising of Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman and Sachin Tendulkar, will have to conduct a thorough process of short listing the next coach of the Indian side.

With current coach Anil Kumble directly earning a nomination among the narrowed down candidates for the job, below, we have a look at the 5 likely individuals who could take over the role of Team India’s head coach really soon.

  1. Anil Kumble:

Having known the side since the last 12 months now, Kumble precisely knows the strengths and weaknesses of all members. The former leg spinner took charge of things from the tour of West Indies last year and since then, the Indian test side has dominated the proceedings like no other team. In the 17 Test matches the side played under the coaching of Kumble, India won 11, while they lost just a solitary test. Kumble as a coach has been excellent to say the least as he made some serious impact right from the time he stepped in. One of his bold calls included backing the under fire Cheteshwar Pujara. The Saurashtra batsman was axed from the Test side under Ravi Shastri’s coaching, but it was Kumble who backed the batsman completely. It resulted in Pujara emerging as India’s best batsman of the home season and playing an integral knock against Australia at Bangalore which turned out to be a series turning innings. If India manage to win the Champions Trophy, the probability of Kumble being retained will shoot up massively without second thoughts.

  1. Richard Pybus:

Richard Pybus is an extremely reputed name in the English and South African domestic circles. Born in England, Pybus as a cricketer might have played just one solitary List A game, but his credentials as a coach are top notch indeed. The most impressive aspects in Pybus’ resume reflect his stint with Pakistan during the 1999 World Cup in England. With Pybus in charge, Pakistan made it to the finals of the tournament only to lose to Australia. The Pakistani outfit under Pybus however, reflected a sense of positivity and aggression which wasn’t spotted ever before. Despite doing exceedingly well, Pybus wasn’t completely backed by the inefficient PCB and didn’t feature with the team for long. He even had a short coaching stint with Bangladesh, before he took over a role in West Indies cricket in 2012. Considering his coaching experience, Pybus is indeed quite a decent candidate for the job. The metamorphosis of Shoaib Akhtar to a serious match winner took place under his guidance.

  1. Lalchand Rajput:

Someone who isn’t alien to the functioning of Indian cricket, is Lalchand Rajput. Rajput, a well known coach within the Indian domestic circuit was at the helm of affairs for team India for a  brief period before Gary Kirsten eventually took over in early 2008. It was under the coaching of Lalchand Rajput, when India won that inaugural ICC World T20 in South Africa in 2007 and a few months later went on to create history by winning the CB Series in Australia. The most fascinating aspect about Rajput’s tenure was the belief which he instilled into a young and relatively inexperienced Indian outfit. It was this belief and backing which motivated the likes of Rohit Sharma, Ishant Sharma, Gautam Gambhir and a few others, to take their game to the very next level in the future. Currently coaching Afghanistan, Rajput should be perceived as someone really capable of handling this superstar laden Indian team.

Tom Moody
  1. Tom Moody:

Regarding the position of India’s head coach, Tom Moody isn’t an unfamiliar name. The former Australian all rounder has applied for the coveted job twice in the past, having slimly lost out to Greg Chappell in 2005 and Anil Kumble last year. That however, hasn’t deterred Moody from applying for the job and if fortune favors him this time, he could well get the position. As a coach, Moody needs no introduction, having coached the Sri Lankans till 2007 which included their mighty impressive campaign of the 2007 ICC World Cup in the Caribbean. Apart from that, Moody has also been the coach of the Sunrisers Hyderabad since 2013, and was at the helm of affairs when the side won the title in 2016. Known for his calm demeanor and sharp tactics, Moody’s appointment should bring Indian fans a lot of elation and excitement.

  1. Virender Sehwag:

The most out of the box candidate for the role of India’s coach is Virender Sehwag, who applied for the job on the insistence of his former teammates. Sehwag as a player was nothing less than a revolutionary who changed the outlook of Test cricket from a global standpoint. His approach was very simple and grounded – Go out on the field and express yourself from the first ball. Aggression and unparalleled ruthlessness was a clear quality in Sehwag’s attributes. His coaching portfolio isn’t that large, having managed just the Kings XI Punjab for two seasons now. As a coach though, he could form a great equation with his Delhi and India teammate Virat Kohli. Sehwag also precise knows the members of the current Indian side in and out, having played with them in the evening of his career. It will surely be a fresh sight to watch Sehwag taking over as India’s coach.
