Five Likely Replacements For Delhi Daredevils Quinton De Kock For IPL 2017

Delhi Daredevils recently dealt a colossal blow as their star wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton De Kock was ruled out due to an injury. The South African run machine sustained an injury to his right index finger during the recently concluded Test series in New Zealand and despite playing the final test amidst great agony, he was ruled out of the IPL.

In a bid to remain fit for the all important ICC Champions Trophy, De Kock will skip this year’s IPL.

This means that the Daredevils will be on the lookout for someone explosive like the southpaw. The think tank could have straightaway looked at dynamic England opener Alex Hales, but the fact that De Kock doubles up as a keeper doesn’t help Hales.

The Daredevils have a few wicketkeepers in the ranks such as Sam Billings, Rishab Pant and Sanju Samson, but none of them are full-time keepers.

Thereby, we have a look at the five wicket-keeper batsmen, who could possibly replace Quinton De Kock for the tenth edition of the IPL.

  1. Luke Ronchi:

After going unsold in this year’s player auctions, New Zealand wicket-keeper Luke Ronchi could well fit in for the Daredevils. On his day, Ronchi is a profusely destructive batsman and has showcased that several times in the past for New Zealand.

Having played for the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the inaugural edition of the IPL, Ronchi surely has some experience under his belt and that can be utilised by the Daredevils.

A steady wicketkeeper behind the stumps to go along with his attacking batting can do the trick for him.

  1. Niroshan Dickwella

Among the rare positives for Sri Lankan cricket in the months gone by, has been the emergence of young wicket-keeper batsman Niroshan Dickwella.

The 23-year-old left-handed batsman enjoys hammering the bowlers right from the start with his attacking strokeplay. Dickwella was on fire for the Sri Lankan’s in South Africa, as he enjoyed the bounce and carry there.

The southpaw has even piped the experienced Kusal Perera for the preferred role of the keeper-batsman in the national side.

His attacking strokeplay at the top of the order could make him a decent replacement for Quinton De Kock.

  1. Johnson Charles:

Johnson Charles is best known for his special affection for the Indian bowlers, as witnessed in the semi-final of the 2016 ICC World T20, where his half-century powered West Indies’ run chase at Wankhede stadium in Mumbai.

A clean striker of the cricket ball, Charles has consistently done well for the Calypso Kings and can be relied on to provide the fireworks right at the top. He is at ease against the pacers as well as the slower bowlers, as was evident in the previous World T20.

Charles was a common face in West Indies’ dual World T20 wins in 2012 as well as 2016. His last half century in T20I’s came against India at Florida last year, as he tore into the Indian bowlers, smashing 79 off just 33 deliveries.

  1. Mohammad Shahzad:

This Afghan wicket-keeper has been in the thick of things of late as he has broken record after record. A phenomenal striker at the top, Shehzad has quickly risen up in the T20I run charts and features in the top 5 run-makers in the format.

Shehzad has featured in the Bangladesh Premier League previously and is not short of quality experience. He made a name for himself against South Africa in Mumbai at the previous World T20, where he punished the likes of Chris Morris and Kyle Abbott with ease.

The Afghanistan keeper on his day can provide his side with a skyrocketing start and could well be on his way for the tenth edition of the IPL.

Jonny Bairstow to replace Alex Hales in England’s T20 squad against India.
  1. Jonny Bairstow:

If wiser heads are to prevail, then the ideal replacement for De Kock should be none other than England wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow. The elegant keeper batsman had a fabulous tour of India recently with the bat, as he notched up a few half-centuries in the Test series.

Despite getting just one ODI to play, he made the most out of it, as he went on to score 56 in what turned out to be a thrilling victory for England at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

With plenty of T20 experience on his back, Bairstow can be relied upon to excel for the Daredevils and can bat anywhere in that batting order. Together with his England teammate Sam Billings, the duo can form a destructive pair for the Zaheer Khan led outfit.
