Five Most Expensive Players In Royal Challengers Bangalore’s History!

Royal Challengers Bangalore are perhaps the most star-studded team in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The current team possesses of some heavyweights of the cricketing world at the moment. Skipper Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle, AB De Villiers, Shane Watson and others make up for a frightening team line up. Acquiring such players comes at a hefty cost. At one glance, these A-listers seem to be costly buys.

But, ironically there have been a bunch of cricketers whom the franchisee owned by UB spirits, has bought at a much bigger cost in the past. In fact, RCB holds the record for spending the biggest sum on a single player in the history of the cash-rich league. Here in this article, Sportzwiki takes a glance at the five most expensive players in the history of Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Cameron White – 7.1 Crore (approx.)

RCB was in a generous mood during the 2011 season and snapped two big names for record sums. The first one being Australian batsman Cameron White. The former Australia, known for his big hitting skills, was added to the already star-studded side after being bought for a hefty amount of 7.1 crores (approx.) The Aussie made his IPL debut with the same franchise in 2009 and played for the same team in the following season as well before being released in the 2011 auction pool. RCB seemed in no mood let the services of the player go and made sure they re-bought him regardless of the price tag. Unfortunately, he could not justify the amount spent on him after being able to make only 104 runs 6 matches.

Jacques Kallis – 7.1 Crores (approx.)

In the same auction, South African veteran Jacques Kallis was one of the most attractive buys of the 2011 auction. The all-rounder who brought stability in both batting and bowling department was snapped by RCB for 7.1 crores. He was in form during the 2011 season and scored 424 runs in 15 matches at an average of 35.23. However, it was a case of sheer bad luck for RCB as they could not re-buy him in the following season.  The franchises, however, did not retain him for the next season which eventually saw him join Kolkata Knight Riders for whom he played three seasons before the coach of the side.

Kevin Pietersen – 8.5 Crores (approx.)

England star Kevin Pietersen is perhaps the most versatile batsman in modern times. The South African-born right-hander was at the top of the run making chart during his international career before disciplinary issue got better of his England career. However, as mentioned above, the versatility factor in him meant that he was one of the most sought after player in the T20 leagues around the world including IPL. In fact, IPL showed him his worth way before the competing leagues were even born when in the 2009 season, RCB splurged a record 8. Scores on him to acquire his services. He played two seasons for the side before moving to Delhi Daredevils. His debut season was dull as he made just 93 runs in 6 games. The following season was more fruitful as he made 236 runs 7 matches at an average of 59.

Dinesh Kartik – 10.5 Crores:

Tamil Nadu wicket-keeper Dinesh Kartik was one the most sought after players in the 2015 IPL Auction. The aggressive right-handed batsman was part of Delhi Daredevils for the initial two seasons and later moved to Kings XI Punjab in 2011 and was traded to Mumbai Indians ahead of the 2012 season. He had a great time with MI and his performances for the franchises also earned him a recalled to the Indian team. Kartik wasn’t retained by MI ahead of the 2014 auction but found takers in Delhi Daredevils. 2015 was a fresh start for him as he once again changed his team and was taken by RCB for a stunning price of 10.5 crores. The season, however, was the worst of his IPL career as he could make only 141 runs in 16 matches with his highest being only 28.

Yuvraj Singh – 14 Crores:

Star southpaw Yuvraj Singh grabbed headlines when the RCB franchise got into an auction tussle with other franchises to grab Yuvi for a record sum of 14 Crores in the 2014 IPL. Yuvraj started his IPL journey as the ‘Icon Player; for Kings XI Punjab before moving to Pune Warriors in 2011. The cricketer was then forced to the sidelines due to the cancer treatment and the recovery related to the illness and was unavailable for the 2012 season. Ahead of the 2014 season, the Yuvi saw himself in the auction pool again after his old franchise Pune Warriors was officially terminated. The turn of events saw him hit jackpot as the RCB acquired him for a record sum before ironically releasing him in the next season.
