Commonly we seen that the matches in cricket mostly get halted or cancelled due to rain and bad light. But there are some more ways than those two.

Here are 5 Unusual Endings of matches in Cricket:

1. India vs Australia, 1984, Jamshedpur:

When Australia faced Indians at oppositions home, in an ODI series of 5 ODIs marking Golden Jubilee of Ranji Trophy, and were set to play 3rd ODI of the series. After the 2nd ODI held at Thiruvananthapuram, teams were taken to Kolkata instead of Jamshedpur due to lack of facilities. The team left for the stadium and kits of the players were sent in Lorry transport a day earlier than they left.

But due to some issues the kits reached way late almost 3-4 hours after the scheduled start of the match. Later the captains agreed for a 24-over match and which started with India batting first and the match eventually washed out after just 5.1 overs of play was possible.

2. India vs Sri Lanka, 1996, Kolkata:

In semi-final of prestigious Cricket World Cup, India faced Sri Lanka at home. The match took place at Eden Gardens, Kolkata around more than 100,000 spectators. Sri Lanka batted first and put a score of 251 on the board. Later Indians were put in a proper position by the opening batsman, Sachin Tendulkar. When almost the tough task looked like a cake walk, Sachin Tendulkar was dismissed by Muralidharan which began an epic Indian collapse. Sachin fell as second wicket at 108 and by 120 India were 8 down. And it looked tough for India, the audience halted match with throwing stones and water bottles and didn’t stopped on any requests. Which made the match official nothing other than just abandoning the game, which meant Sri Lanka qualify for Final.

3. England vs Pakistan, 2006, The Oval:

In the final test of four test series, Pakistan faced the hosts England at Oval to win at least a game in already lost series. Till the fourth Day, Pakistan was in a great position of winning the test with England beginning their second innings trailing big margin. After the Lunch, while Pakistan were bowling, English batsmen found that the ball which was in use had lost its shape. The umpires changed the ball and without any warnings they imposed 5 run penalty as cause of Pakistan’s ball tampering. Later the session ended early due to rain and when it resumed after Tea with Batsmen and Umpires on field kept waiting for Pakistan players for take their positions.

When the umpires consulted the Pakistan team they replied that they weren’t satisfies with the decision and don’t want to play. With Pakistan not willing to play, Umpire David Shepard declared England as winners. This match later went in a long controversies and investigations.

4. West Indies vs England, 2009, Antigua:

Excatly after 11 years Antigua took place for a sudden abandonment due to poor pitch again it repeated the same. After at Sabaina Park in 1997 where a match was abandoned due to a crumbling pitch, in 2009 Vivian Richards’ stadium was held as venue for another WI-Eng test which was called off after 10 balls were bowled due to a sand farce near the bowling run ups.

With the foot marks been spotted in the first two overs despite of couple of adjustments it remained same which made the umpires to call off due to the Sand farce in the outfield which is dangerous to the bowlers.

5. India vs Sri Lanka, 2009, New Delhi:

India-Sri Lanka fifth and final ODI game of series marked its significance even been a dead rubber as the game was abandoned due to a poor pitch produced for the game. Even they were many matches ended due to the same reason but this game was special as almost half of the first innings was completed before it was called off. The pitch looked a bit different with a bits and pieces of grass been left on it and was rolled a couple of times before the game.

Once the match started it was showing signs of uneven bounce. With the winter season around, the Day game was began with fog factor and players waited for it to be cleared for better playing conditions. But it was same throughout and never looked improving with Spinner Harbhajan even getting bounce like a pacer. With Sri Lanka complaining it to the referee with couple of batters injured due to uneven bounce, the match was halted and later was called off. DCA offered for a game on alternative strip after a roll, but officials weren’t satisfied with it also.
