Former Pakistan cricketer Akhtar Sarfaraz passed away on Monday with colon cancer. The Peshawar batsman had represented Pakistan in 4 ODIs during his international career. But he fought hard with cancer over the past few days  at the Shaukat Khanum Memorial cancer hospital.

The medical facility was incidentally built by prime minister Imran Khan. Akhtar Sarfaraz made his debut against West Indies at Sharjah in December 1997. However, he could not cement his place in the national team.

He played his last game for Pakistan against West Indies again at Dhaka in October 1998. However, the player had better returns in domestic cricket with Peshawar.  Akthar was good with the bat for Peshawar in first class cricket. He made an impressive 5720 in just 118 first class games.

Akthar played his last game in January 2007 against Karachi Urba in Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. The talented player also featured regularly in List A cricket. He also played in T20 format way back in 2005. He was also used sparsely as a part time bowler in his domestic career.

After finishing his career as a player, Sarfraz worked as a regional coach and then served as a selector for the Pakistan women’s side between 2018 and 2019.

The sudden demise of Akhtar left Pakistan cricket in shock.

The Pakistan Cricket Board were quick to offer their condolences for the tragic death of Akhtar Sarfaraz.

PCB chairman Ehsan Mani paid tribute to Sarfraz, saying, “The PCB is shocked to hear the sad news of Akhtar’s passing. It is very difficult to accept and comprehend if you lose someone from the cricket fraternity, particularly as young and lively as Akhtar who was admired, respected and loved by everyone.

“It’s tragic that death cut short his life at such a young age, but he will live in our memories for a very long period. On behalf of the PCB, I want to extend my deepest condolences to Akhtar’s family and assure them that in these difficult times, we stand firmly with them.”
