Former World Cup winning Indian cricketer and former Indian coach Sandeep Patil has shown his interest for Indian coaching job as he has applied for the job. Sandeep Patil is currently serving as chairman of the selection committee of Indian cricket team. Patil took over the currently holding post in 2012 and his 4-year term is going to end soon.
Sandeep Patil confirmed the news by telling The Indian Express, “Yes, I have applied for Indian team coach job.” Patil has sent his CV to the new BCCI secretary Ajay Shirke.
The BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) has recently advertised for Indian coaching job with a list of nine criteria. The deadline for the application for the job is 10th June 2016.
At the beginning of the advertisement, there was a little bit confusion over the language clause. In the application, it had been mentioned that “Hindi and other Indian languages” which raise the confusion about is that mandatory or not. Later board issued a correction that it is not mandatory. However, with the optional language clause, Indian coaches surely have an advantage for the coaching job selection.
Apart from Sandeep Patil, the other current selectors Vikram Rathour, Pravin Amre, Lalchand Rajput, and Hrishikesh Kanitkar are also set to apply for Indian coaching job.
Sandeep Patil was one of the regular members in Indian squad during the 1983 World Cup, which India won. After retirement from cricket, Patil became India A coach. In 1996, Patil became coach of Indian senior team from March to September. However, Indian team’s results were not good under his coaching during 1996 as he failed to carry on that job for a long time.
But as a coach his best moment was during his coaching for Kenya cricket team. Under Patil’s coaching guide, Kenya reached at the semi-final of 2003 World Cup which was unbelievable. As a coach, Patil also helped Oman to qualify in ICC trophy.
Currently, Sanjay Banger is serving as interim coach of the Indian team for the upcoming Zimbabwe tour. A new coach is expected to be named on 25th June 2016.
