He said to NDTV that the recovery from the initial defeats of KKR was never easy. KKR lost 4 matches in a trot and were able to win just 2 games out of 7. They needed to win 6 out of their remaining 7 to make it to the play-offs. The aggressive leader said that he never lost faith in his team. He knew that there were many people in the team who were mentally strong immensely.
When he was being asked about the kind of celebrations that happened, KKR skipper said that he controlled his emotions and did not celebrate that loud. He said that win of 2012 and 2014 are equally cherishable. Though he admitted that it was the first IPL win for players like Manish Pandey and Piyush Chawla and they were pretty much excited and overjoyed but he did not intervene in their celebrations. He admitted that “it is always a great fun watching your teammates celebrate the championship win” and he enjoyed it most.
KKR skipper also stated that he liked to spend time with the teammates off the field and always tried to back his teammates and encouraged them to do well because during even they went for bad times in someway or the other. In the interview, he praised the contributions of Ryan Ten doschate, Shakib-Al-Hasan, Piyush Chawla, Suryakumar Yadav and many more for the team and he admitted that they are very much optimistic in their approach.
When he was being asked by NDTV about the celebration ceremonies and plenty of fans getting injured by the police, Gautam replied by saying that fans hold a major contribution in KKR winning the trophy and he said that he personally felt that such kind of celebration was completely unnecessary. It brought up chaos. He clearly stated that they celebrated in 2012 so there was no point in re-doing that again. He said that he felt bad for injured fans and also stated that KKR is lucky enough to have the best “FAN BASE” in IPL.
He said to NDTV that Yusuf’s knock of 72 runs against Sunrisers was the turnaround for the team. And after that a belief grew inside the team that they could chase any target down with ease. He stated that there was calmness in the bench when they chased 200 in the final because everyone had a belief that when they can chase 180 runs in 15 overs, they can surely chase 200 in 20.
He said that KKR is one of the most passionate and also one of the most hungry teams of IPL. According to him, that served as a major factor in KKR winning the tournament. He is really a great leader for the team and he himself is very much positive. He always takes out the positives in everything.
He also mentioned about Wasim Akram’s contribution for the team. He pointed that Wasim Akram taught bowlers like Vinay Kumar, Umesh Yadav, Piyush Chawla and others pretty well and shared all his life long experiences about the game and bowling in particular and such advices proved golden for KKR boys.
He also mentioned that he went through many ups and downs since the 2011 World Cup and life around him has changed much. He also stated that being out of the Indian team for 17 months is a tough thing to bear but he always believed in staying on the present and never lost hope. He was recently selected in the Indian squad for the England tour and he said that he is looking forward to that.
To conclude, Gautam Gambhir said that he is a guy who believes in results and not performances and whatever happens, he is still that much passionate about cricket and his hunger for runs, for wins will always be the same. The only negative thing in him, that he admitted to NDTV that he is very much superstitious and trying to overcome on that.
