A Glance At Credentials Of Team India Head Coach’s Applicants

Anil Kumble’s shocking resignation as Team India coach has left one and all surprised. His decision came after the BCCI decided to not renew his one-year contract despite his impressive stint and invited fresh applications for the post. Kumble’s contract as the head coach of the Indian team was set to end after the conclusion of the ICC Champions Trophy but the Indian board had stated that Kumble would accompany the team to the upcoming limited-overs series against Windies.

Prior to the Champions Trophy, rumours of a rift between Kumble and India captain Virat Kohli was viciously doing the rounds, raising speculations over the legendary spinner’s future as the coach. And even though the board had decided to extend Kumble’s stint for one more series, Kohli was reportedly not ready to budge from his position on Kumble. The chapter has ended now and BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) comprising of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman will now have to speed up the process of selecting the new coach.

The trio had selected Kumble as the coach last year and the decision turned out to be excellent as the India’s highest wicket-taker in Test has had a very successful stint with the team, winning 12 and losing just one of the 17 Tests. During his stint, India also registered ODI series victory over England and New Zealand and a T20 series win over the former in addition to finishing as the runners-up in the recently-concluded Champions Trophy.

Now with only a handful of days remaining before the Men in Blue start the series in the Caribbeans, the CAC will be looking to select the new coach at the earliest. Last month, the BCCI had asked for applications for the post of Head Coach and among those who applied were Virender Sehwag, Tom Moody, Richard Pybus, Dodda Ganesh and Lalchand Rajput.

Well, the CAC will definitely select the best among the five applicants, here we are looking at the credentials of each candidate.

Richard Pybus:

The most successful coach in South Africa’s first-class cricket, Richard Pybus began his coaching career at a young age after injuries hampered his playing career. However, Pybus would have little complaint as he achieved remarkable success as a coach. He has guided the Titans and the Cape Cobras to nine championship titles over six seasons, winning the Supersport Series Four Day Competition four times. He has completed the domestic double three times in a row as a coach, twice with the Titans and once with the Cape Cobras. His phenomenal record saw him bagging the South African Cricket Coach of the year in 2008–09 and 2010–11.

Apart from coaching the South Africa’s domestic teams, Pybus had coached Pakistan in the 1999 World Cup, when they made the final. However, his second stint with Pakistan in the 2000s wasn’t successful as he was just one month into the job. In May 2012, he was appointed as Bangladesh coach but resigned just five months later because of a disagreement over the terms of his contract.

Tom Moody:

The former Australia cricketer has already lost twice in the race for becoming Team India coach. In 2005, he lost to his compatriot Greg Chappell before being overlooked by the CAC in favour of Anil Kumble last year. However, the two-time World Cup winner has an impressive resume which might make him third-time lucky.

In 2007, he had guided Sri Lanka to the final of the World Cup and has enjoyed a highly successful stint as Sunrisers Hyderabad coach in the Indian Premier League. Under his coaching, the Hyderabad-based franchise won its maiden IPL title in 2016 and made it to the playoffs in this year’s tournament.

Lalchand Rajput:

The former India cricketer, who boasts a first-class average of nearly 50, Lalchand Rajput’s coaching career has been quite successful. He was the manager of the India team that won the inaugural World T20 in 2007. He also had had successful coaching stints with the India under-19 and A teams.

Rajput, who plied his trade for Mumbai Indians in the first season of the IPL in 2008, was one of the candidates interviewed for coach’s post last year. And although he lost the race to Kumble, he was appointed coach of Afghanistan soon after.

Dodda Ganesh:

Probably the candidate with the least chance of bagging the lucrative job, Dodda Ganesh coached Goa for four years from 2012.  The former India cricketer, who is currently a senior selector of the Karnataka side, was also the coach of National Cricket Academy’s under-16 and under-19 sides.

Virender Sehwag:

Interestingly, the candidate with the least experience among the applicants, Virender Sehwag is seen by many as the front-runner to land the job. Sehwag’s only coaching experience is his stint with Kings XI Punjab as their mentor in last year’s IPL. The Punjab-based outfit had finished last the previous season but Sehwag was appointed the head of cricket operations and strategy for this year’s season. Kings XI performed better this season as they remained in contention for the playoffs till the very last.
