According to some reports, veteran off-spinner Harbhajan Singh is set to miss this year’s Duleep Trophy due to family commitments. The 36-year old was recently blessed with a girl child and reports suggest that Harbhajan wants to spend some quality time with his newly-born child and his wife, who are currently in the United Kingdom.
A BCCI official, who is aware of the developments and wanted to remain anonymous, told the Press Trust of India: “Harbhajan’s daughter is not even a month old. It is quite natural that he needs to be with his wife and daughter at this point in time. The family is always the top most priority. He is currently in the United Kingdom with his family.”
The latest edition of Duleep Trophy is scheduled to take place from August 23 to September 14. For the first time in history, the tournament will be played with the pink ball. With BCCI contemplating the idea of hosting its first international match with the pink ball, the upcoming tournament is seen as a big step towards that goal.
Suresh Raina, Gautam Gambhir and Yuvraj Singh are the other big stars who are going to be the major attraction of the tournament but it seems that the off-spinner will give the tournament a miss this year.
Apart from Harbhajan, the likes of Ajinkya Rahane and Shikhar Dhawan will also be out of sight from the tournament as the two Indian batsmen would be with Indian T20 team that will be playing two T20Is against West Indies in Florida later this month.
