The Indian Premier League (IPL), which is set to enter a decade of its presence among cricket fans, will introduce the famous helmet cam, reports suggest. According to a report published by Hindustan Times, players will wear camera fitted helmets during live games.
The news is as exciting as the slew of changes and modification the IPL has introduced to enhance the viewing of the game. The ‘Helmet cam’ may make its debut after the introduction of a similar feature which enabled the umpires to wear cams on their hats. Known as umpire cam, the new angle of viewing was introduced in 2014 and was an instant hit.
The idea behind this innovation is to get cricket fans as close to the live action as possible. The umpire cam enables the viewers to watch the game from the bowler’s end, thus in a literal sense, they can view action through the eyes of the umpire. The emergence of helmet cam will add a new dimension to it, making the game view-able in first person’s angle through the eyes of the batsman. If the helmet cam does get a green signal from the BCCI, viewers will get a new angle to cherish their favorite sport. Obviously, it’ll be amazing to see Mahendra Singh Dhoni play the helicopter shot against Lasith Malinga or watch Virat Kohli play the famous cover drive against the likes of Mitchell Johnson and others.
As reported by Hindustan Times, the entire unit — including camera and battery pack — weighs less than 100g and it’ll be evenly distributed front-to-back on the helmet. This technology has been previously tried in the Big Bash League (BBL) and has been a huge success.
