With Australia’s main bowlers struggling to break the epic stand between Cheteshwar Pujara and Wriddiman Saha on the fourth day of the Ranchi Test, Steve Smith’s decision to use his part-time bowlers most notably offs-spinner Glenn Maxwell left everyone surprised.
But former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar, who is a part of the commentary team for the official broadcasters, has now revealed why Maxwell was not used in tandem on the fourth day and its as sarcastic as anyone could think of. The former player revealed the reason when his fellow commentators expressed their surprise to see Maxwell being under-bowled.
Gavaskar said:” I think Sanjay (Manjrekar) you forget that yesterday after he dived and he fell, he damaged his shoulder. So he might not be fit for bowling.
In reply, an impressed Sanjay Manjrekar said: ” Could be, could be.”
Gavaskar’s comment was clearly a reference to the incident when Maxwell mocked Virat Kohli’s shoulder injury on the third day. The India skipper was left clutching his right shoulder in pain after he dived while fielding at the mid-on area and later scans revealed he had suffered a strain due to which he could not take field on Day 2. And he was mocked by the Australian all-rounder when he came out to bat on the penultimate day of the match. Maxwell was seen imitating the Indian batsman’s action by clutching his right shoulder after his dive to save a boundary.
