Former Australia wicketkeeper and dashing batsman Adam Gilchrist said that he completely contradicts his countryman Ian Chappell’s comments on Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s stature as a Test captain. Chappell initially said that MS Dhoni is not the right candidate for the captaincy in the longer formats and Dhoni should hand over the reins to Virat Kohli.
“I have said it number of times before that I am very impressed with Dhoni right from the moment he arrived into the scene. He is an amazing captain and has won India T20 and ODI World Cups and also India reached the pinnacle by reaching the number one spot in Test cricket,” he told reporters during an event organised by University of Wollongong.
Gilly also said that Dhoni is a calm and an extra-ordinary character who has a strong leadership skills apart from all-round cricketing quality.
When asked about the 2015 Cricket World Cup, Gilchrist said Australia are one of the favourites to win the 2015 World Cup but there could be three or four other contenders as well.
“I think Australia will be one of the favourites in the start of the World Cup tournament. Don’t know there is one favourite. Any number of three or four teams could win the World Cup,” he added. As of now the teams are maintaining home ground advantage at the moment. You can see Australia, India and England – they have not done well abroad,” he said.
When enquired about upcoming India’s tour to Australia, the former Aussie Gloveman said that Australia and India are one of the few sides that have a good record at home and are equally bad away. He also expects the Indian team especially Virat Kohli to learn from the past mistakes and give the Aussies a good run for the money.
