I Am Not Thinking About T20 Captaincy At All: Shakib Al Hasan

Bangladesh witnessed an end of an era as Mashrafe Bin Mortaza showed up for the last time in the shortest format. His departure has left Bangladesh Cricket Board in a search of a new skipper and the name of the veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is being propped up as the front runner.

But despite being strong a candidate, Shakib isn’t showing any keenness in taking up the top job. Shakib, who will be seen in action for the Kolkata Knight Riders, admitted that he is currently looking forward to performing in the Indian Premier League and isn’t thinking of the captaincy job at the moment.

“Actually I do not know anything in this regard and to be honest I am not thinking about captaincy at all. To me, the most important are to be with the team and contribute.”

“Right now what I am looking at is Indian Premier League. I cannot gather exactly when Bangladesh will play their next T20I match” – Shakib Al Hasan added.

Shakib Al Hasan led Bangladesh in four T20I matches back in 2009 and 2010. All of those matches ended up with negative results for him.

But, regardless of what Shakib has said, BCB will be moving with picking a new captain for the shortest format. The captaincy was adopted the ‘split’ captaincy in 2014 and since then Mushfiqur has been in charge of the Test while Mashrafe led the team in the limited overs format.

“Shakib is the most likely candidate to take the T20 captaincy,” The BCB president Nazmul Hassan said after Mashrafe quit from T20Is.

“We always had five candidates. Since Mashrafe and Mushfiqur are already captains, we only had Tamim, Mahmudullah and Shakib as the remaining ones. Shakib’s mental attitude and performance show that he has matured, and is a full grown-up. He is ahead of the other candidates.”

Bangladesh is fresh from a highly productive tour of Sri Lanka which saw the Test, ODI and T20Is end in a draw. The tourists were able to give superb farewell to Mashrafe after they snapped up an incredible win the final match of the tour, beating the hosts by 45 runs. This was also Bangla Tiger’s first in the format since they beat Oman in Dharamsala in March last year. The top contender, Shakib, was the hero of the match having top-scored for his side with a 31-ball 38, before claiming 3 for 24 after opened the bowling.
