Ian Chappell Reveals Who Is A Better Captain – Virat Kohli or Steven Smith?

Day in day out, one question which keeps the cricketing world starving for an answer, is who among them is a better captain, Virat Kohli or Steven Smith?

Well, the former Australian captain Ian Chappell has given his verdict on the same.

The Aussie legend in his latest column has raised some questions over Steven Smith’s captaincy on the field, comparing him to that of India’s Virat Kohli. However, to everyone’s surprise, the former batsman of Australian picked Virat as a better skipper than Steven Smith.

Backing his own words, Chappell says one trait which shades Virat ahead of Smith is his ability to use his spinners well in the game, which according to him, Steven Smith hasn’t done in recent past.

“Under his leadership R Ashwin has prospered as the leader of India’s attack. In contrast, there have been times when Nathan Lyon has struggled to the point where his selection was in doubt until he produced a much-improved effort in Adelaide.”

Seemed impressed with Virat Kohli’s twin centuries at Adelaide in 2015, where the right-handed batsman gave it all to march his team past the winning line but eventually failed, Chappell says his innings of 141 was nothing less than inspirational and further argued that his intent to go for the win raised some eyebrows too.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli played an impressive knock pf 141 runs in the second innings of the Adelaide Test match against Australia in 2015.

“Kohli has displayed the ability to lift his already high standard in times of need, and there was no better example than his second-innings century against Australia at Adelaide Oval. Not only was it an inspirational innings, it firmly declared his hand as a captain who would try to win the game for as long as humanly possible.”

With Australia scheduled to tour India early in 2017 for four Test matches, Chappell feels that the contest would be exciting, as two young superstars will play a crucial role both as a batsman and captain.

“It should be a fascinating contest between these two evolving captains when they clash in early 2017. With both aspects – batting and captaincy – of equal importance, it will be the one who provides plenty of runs and inspiration for his bowlers who will be holding aloft the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.”
