ICC Appoint Corey Anderson as Event Ambassador for ICC Under-19 World Cup 2018

The World Cricket governing body International Cricket Council (ICC) on Thursday has nominated New Zealand all-rounder Corey Anderson as the event ambassador for the 2018 Under-19 World Cup.

“You go from playing domestic cricket to playing international cricket – it’s a big step but it’s a step that is necessary,” Anderson said in ICC’s press release.

The promising all-rounder Anderson has further expressed excitement to become the representative of the tournament which plays a significant role for the budding cricketers.

“It is extremely exciting to be involved again in the U-19 World Cup,” Anderson added.

Pertinently, the 26-year-old Christchurch-born Anderson had featured twice in U-19 World Cups in 2010 at home and in 2008 when the tournament was held in Malaysia.

“I played two of them – it is the first stepping stone to playing international cricket,” Anderson remarked.

Hobbled by injury in the recent past, Anderson smashed four fifties in 10 matches after scoring 324 runs across both the U-19 editions in which he represented the Black Caps. Photo Credit: ICC/Web.

The 22-day tournament will be hosted by New Zealand for the 16-team tournament, as the tournament will kick start on January 13 (Saturday) and run through February 03.

The future players are looking forward to wrestling in the coveted tournament, before impressing the national selectors for making it to the top-flight cricket.

Chris Tetley, who is the Head of Events for ICC feels having Anderson as the ambassador would leave a significant mark in the competition in his backyard.

“Having Corey on board is ideal because he a player who has come through this very system and hails from New Zealand,” Tetley said in ICC’s statement.

The 12th edition of the U-19 World Cup will be hosted at seven venues across four cities – to witness the spectacular performances from the youngsters.

Anderson, who represented New Zealand across formats, believes such competition boost the morale of the prominent players, who are raring to go while donning the national jersey in the future.

“To have it in our backyard is great. We are going to see players who people may not know now but who in the years to come will become household names,” Anderson reiterated.

The World Cup of U-19 is a stepping stone for the professionals and Anderson is one such example, who rose among such ranks – to grab the opportunity at international circuit.

Anderson made his international debut in 2014. He has played 49 One-day internationals followed by 29 Twenty20 internationals and 13 Tests. He has bagged 90 wickets across all three formats.

The first tournament of the U-19 World Cup was held in 1986 in Australia, as most of the star cricketers have had represented their respective countries.
