When this ICC Champions Trophy commenced, there were some clear doubts over the form and fitness of Rohit Sharma. A lot of pundits were extremely sceptical about the way in which Sharma would go about in the all important tournament. In the warm-up game as well against Bangladesh, Sharma was dismissed quite early, further fueling those doubts.
However, once the tournament took off, so did Rohit’s form. The elegant right-hander was at his supreme best as he racked up back to back half-centuries against Pakistan and Sri Lanka. But, he saved his best for the semi-final, as his breathtaking century simply blew away Bangladesh.
Needing 265 to win, Sharma set off right from the word go, as he was extremely aggressive and dominant. He got to a fine century, which turned out to be his second one in an ICC event knockout game. Post the game, he was delighted after his batting.
“It was a great knock, especially when it comes on a winning note,” said Rohit. “Always memorable when you score a hundred and win the game. Last two games also I was trying to get a big one, unfortunately, could not get through. After playing the initial few overs, it was all about you making mistake and getting out. I kept telling myself to bat as deep as possible.”
“We have been playing some good cricket. Even our bowling, we have been bowling well. We have all bases covered. One last hurdle against Pakistan, we know it is going to be a big one. We will be up for it, but for now we will cherish this win,” Rohit added.
Lauding skipper Virat Kohli for his leadership, Rohit said,
“Virat Kohli was absolutely fluent; as soon as he walked in, it felt like he was batting overnight. That’s the kind of form he is in. As a captain on the field, he was brilliant, manoeuvring the field and making the right bowling changes.”
