ICC Champions Trophy 2017 – Pakistan Vs Sri Lanka – Match Prediction

This ongoing edition of the ICC Champions Trophy has been a thrilling affair, to say the least. The fact that one of Pakistan or Sri Lanka are bound to qualify for the semi-finals, is a fascinating statement in itself, as not many backed these units to go past the first hurdle. But now, with a virtual quarter-final ahead of us, one these “underdogs” will take on England in the first semi-final at Cardiff.

Pakistan and Sri Lanka have traditionally shared a mixed rivalry, with one team outperforming the other with every passion occasion. While Pakistan has upstaged Sri Lanka in one ICC event, we have had Sri Lanka outclassing Pakistan in another game of an integral tournament.

Recent form suggests this game be more than an exciting contest alone. On one end, an outfit full of enthusiasm like Sri Lanka has rejuvenated their team spirit after a morale-boosting victory over India, thanks to their batting. While for the traditionally troubled Pakistan, despite all the hurdles engulfing their team, they broke South Africa’s spine, thanks to a superb bowling performance.

Overview:

Pakistan:

For a side that entered this tournament as the last seeded entrant, the fact that they managed to win a game should stand as an achievement on its own. Knowing Pakistan and their mentality of attacking ferociously when cornered, it wouldn’t be a surprise if another impressive performance from this side is witnessed. Skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed has been quite efficient and the win against South Africa was a much-needed oasis in the desert for Pakistan. Tinkering with the team after such an emphatic performance wouldn’t be advisable for Pakistan, and the same core is expected to play against Sri Lanka. A lot will once again depend on the shoulders of Mohammad Amir and Junaid Khan. Rattling Sri Lanka with early wickets will be the priority.

Sri Lanka:

Just prior to their game against India, former skipper Kumar Sangakkara urged the young Sri Lankan side to play without any fears and play with complete arrogance. They stuck true to their former legend’s words and stamped their dominance over the Indian bowling at the Oval. The return of captain marvellous Angelo Matthews has instilled positives into the side and that was clearly visible with their performance against India a few days ago. For Sri Lanka, once again their batting will hold the aces. The experienced trio of Dinesh Chandimal, Angelo Matthews and Lasith Malinga would have to be at their best in this crunch game.

Match Prediction:

While it’s a battle between two equally weighted outfits, Pakistan holds a slight edge over Sri Lanka, as a courtesy mainly of their supreme bowling prowess. Expect Pakistan to make it to the semi-finals with a win over Sri Lanka.
