ICC Champions Trophy 2017: Virender Sehwag Ignores Shikhar Dhawan, Gautam Gambhir In His 15-Man Squad

The speculations are still rife over India’s participation in the ICC Champions Trophy following the result of the ICC board meeting in Dubai earlier this week. The Board of Control for India (BCCI), on Wednesday (April 26), was outvoted was outvoted 9-1 as the governing body of the game approved the finance model which granted the BCCI a share of US $293 million from ICC events until 2023.  A miffed Indian cricket board is still mulling over their participation in the upcoming tournament and have already skipped the April 25 deadline to announce the squad.

However, all these developments have not stopped the experts to name their Indian squad for the showpiece event which begins on June 1 in the United Kingdom. As reported in Dainik Bhaskar, the swashbuckling opener has ignored the likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Gautam Gambhir and Suresh Raina from his 15-man squad.

With KL Rahul all but out of the tournament owing to a shoulder injury, Shikhar Dhawan, who had played an integral part when India had won the Champions Trophy four year ago in England, is seen as the front-runner to partner Rohit Sharma. Gautam Gambhir, who is the leading run-scorer in the ongoing Indian Premier League, has also tipped by many to get a recall from the Indian team. However, Sehwag has decided to go with Ajinkya Rahane for the opening spot.

At number three is the expected name of the skipper of Virat Kohli. The India skipper is followed by Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni, who are looking off-colour in the IPL.

Sehwag has also included highly-rated Rishabh Pant and the in-form Kedar Jadhav in his team but has ignored Manish Pandey. Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja have been given the all-rounders’ slots in the team. There are no surprises as such in the bowling department.

Here’s Sehwag’s India squad:

Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Virat Kohli (C), Yuvraj Singh, MS Dhoni (wicketkeeper), Rishabh Pant, Kedar Jadhav, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, Umesh Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami.
