ICC World Cup 2015: Team Analysis- Sri Lanka

The underdogs of the tournament Sri-Lanka should not be taken lightly even if they have lost a series to India by 5-0 and to New Zealand.  Sri Lanka has been that team who has appeared in the finals of the 2007 and 2011 WC but have failed, rather choked on the big occasion. This year they will want to make it big by winning by the World Cup and getting back from the lost track. They have won a World Cup once in history in 1996 as underdogs and this year it won’t be a surprise if they do that again.

Strengths:

->Sri Lanka’s batting is the strength. Dilshan, Jayawardena and Sangakkara are the veterans in batting and their peaking of form at the right time is a good sign for them

->Angelo Matthews’ leadership skills. With responsibility on his shoulders, Matthews has changed as a player. He bats sensibly and has turned out to be a pretty good bowler too. His pace can deceive the batsman

->All rounders in the side. Angelo Matthews is one of them and with him are Thisara Perera and Jeevan Mendis. Both can bat and bowl well and are excellent fielders too. With that, Nuwan Kulasekara can even bat and Sachithra Senanayake along with Lasith Malinga can hit those lusty blows.

->Death bowling. Lasith Malinga along with Suranga Lakmal have been fantastic for an year and if they continue, death bowling is what Sri Lanka will look to tighten on.

Weakness:

->Unpredictable team. If Sri Lanka can win against Australia, they can even loose to a non Test playing nation like Scotland. Losing to Zimbabwe in the Warm ups is an example of the same.

->Lone man Malinga show in the bowling department.

->Knack of choking in the finals of major ICC events

->Recent drop in form of Jayawardena and Sangakkara

X- Factor for Sri Lanka in the World Cup:

Undoubtedly, it would be Lahiru Thirimanne. He has made it to the international team not a long time ago and has stayed as the main stay since then. His ability to up the tempo at any given stage is what makes him special. His varied stroke play and excellent technique are other features which might prove handy in Australian conditions. Moreover, he is the vice captain of the team and the added responsibility of a vice captain can make his game even more gentle and sensible. Surely, the player to watch out for

Impact Players:
1. Tillakaratne Dilshan:

Right up, opening the batting is none other than the dasher Dilshan. He can start the innings aggressively, settle in the middle overs, and in the end he can go all blitz and has the ability and knack of scoring big hundreds. He was the leading run scorer in the 2011 WC and there will be no surprise if he retains that title.

2. Mahela Jayawardene:

Mahela is the man who can come in at 10-2 and build on the innings and pack up a huge score. His pacing of an innings is what is admired of him and then he just goes with those paddle sweeps and unorthodox scoops which come in handy in the death overs.

3. Rangana Herath:

Not a long time ago, Rangana Herath has turned out to be a match winner for Sri Lanka. He is that man who can take Sri Lanka out of trouble and take them to glory. He did that against New Zealand in the 2014 T20 World Cup and his admirable quality of rising on the big occasion is what makes him an impact player in this tournament.

4. Lasith Malinga:

Who cannot mention his name in this list? Lasith Malinga means Yorkers at consistency. So required at the death overs, Lasith Malinga has the ability to bowl all 6 balls in the over as Yorkers which can side through and hit the stumps. The toe crushers for the LBW’s, this man has done it all. His slower Yorkers have been a great asset for him and he can do it almost everytime. That is why he is the best in the business. Yorkers don’t require pitch or conditions. A Yorker is a Yorker on a batting pitch and as well as a bowling pitch.
