After putting up a good show against South Africa last Sunday, Zimbabwe almost survived a scare as they managed to sneak in with a 4 wicket win over the United Arab Emirates in their Pool B match at Nelson. Chasing a par score, Zimbabwe lost their way in the middle before Sean Williams made sure that there is no further hiccups and finished things off.
Chasing 286 to win, Zimbabwe were off to a flier as Sikander Raza made the maximum use of the field restriction overs as he along with Regis Chakabva plundered 55 runs in the first 10 overs before UAE skipper struck. Raza was caught at the backward point before Amjad Javed got the prize wicket of Hamilton Mazakadza cheaply. Brendon Taylor and Chakabva steadied the ship and soon after Sean Williams joined Taylor in the middle. The duo rotated strike in the middle overs and kept Zimbabwe in the chase. It was when Nasir Aziz struck as he sent Taylor back to the pavilion and Mohammad Naveed followed it with by dismissing Solomon Mire. Williams was joined by Craig Ervine and the duo batted with responsibility.
They were cautious in their approach and when the batting power play was taken, the duo took the attack to the opposition. They put on a 83 run partnership in 10 overs for the sixth wicket. Williams reached his fifty as Zimbabwe inched closer. As it seemed that Zimbabwe are cruising home, Ervine felt to Krishna Karate. Elton Chigumbura walked in and guided his team home alongside Williams, who remained not-out for 76 off 65 balls with 7 fours and a six.
Earlier Choosing to field, UAE put on 288 on board in their fifty overs courtesy some splendid batting from Shaiman Anwar whose fifty led the way along with Khurram Khan’s 35. Naveed and Javed provided some big hitting towards the end and took them to a respectable total. Tendai Chatara, Solomon Mire and Sean Williams starred with the ball.
