The India South Africa rivalry in the shortest format of the sport T20 Internationals has begun in 2006 where India debuted in this format. Till now these both team faced each other 7 times and faced trice in T20 World Cups. Interestingly there are no matches of those 7 games played in India. Only once India and South Africa faced in the sub-continent in this format and that was in 2012 World T20 held in Sri Lanka.
Of those 7 encounters between these two teams, India won on 5 occasion and South Africa in two. India lead the T20 world cup meeting also as the won three of the four games played.
Here are the highlights of the India-South African meetings in T20Is:
1. December 1st, 2006 (Johannesburg):
This match will be remembered as the India’s debut match in T20Is. This was the only T20I match played the batting Legend Sachin Tendulkar in his career. He scored 10 runs with the bat and picked a wicket also.
South Africa won the toss and choose bat. But a tight and disciplined bowling didn’t make it successful decision, as they could manage only 126/9 on the board. Johan van der Wath, Albie Morkel, Justin Kemp scored twenties. Zaheer Khan and Ajit Agarkar picked two wickets each.
Later Indian batsmen chased down the total with one ball to spare losing 4 wickets with help of contributions from Captain Sehwag, Mongia and Dinesh Karthik. For playing a crucial knock towards the end Karthik was awarded the man of the match.
2. September 20th, 2007 (Durban):
This was the first time when India and South Africa faced in World T20 encounter. In a crucial Group E game in Inaugural edition of World T20, India beat South Africa in must win game and entered semis.
Choosing to bat, India fell to 33/3 inside powerplay. But a well-poised innings from young Rohit Sharma helped India towards a good score. His partnership with MS Dhoni was off 85 in 55 balls helped India to score 153/5. Rohit was unbeaten on 50.
With India needed to win to qualify for semis South Africa just needed to score 126 for the same thing to qualify along with them. But the effort from the Africans was nothing except from Boucher and Morkel whose 69 run partnership kept their hopes alive but their exit meant South African’s exit also as they fell 10 run short than what they needed. RP Singh started the bowling picking up 4 wickets.
3. June 16th, 2009 (Nottingham):
Once again these both team faced in a crucial World T20 game before semi-finals but, India already lost their hopes. South Africa beat India first time in this format and entered the Semis.
With help of AB de Villiers’ 63 South Africa put 130/5 on the board. Later India began the chase well but some slow batting from Raina and Dhoni later increased the required rate and India eventually ended 12 run short of the South African total.
4. May 2nd, 2010 (Gros Islet):
Once again India-South African encounter was set by World T20 and once again it was India’s turn to end up on winning side. The match was overshadowed by a blistering century from Suresh Raina.
India put on a huge score of 186/5 on the board with help of Raina’s century who put on crucial partnerships with Yuvraj Singh and Yusuf Pathan. Later South Africa started their innings on slow note. Which affected their chances as even the late blitz from the middle order couldn’t help them to win as they ended scoring 172/5.
5. January 19th, 2011 (Durban):
India took on South Africa in the part of their tour. And once again it was India’s game. This match was played at Moses Mabhida stadium made for Footie World Cup and this game marked as the Makhaya Ntini’s last International game.
India scored 168/6 with help of 34-ball 53 from Rohit Sharma after winning the toss. Raina contributed with 43.
Later South Africa was in the chase with van Wyk’s 39-ball 67. But lost the momentum after his exit and eventually lost the match too by 21 runs.
6. March 30th, 2012 (Johannesburg):
India flied to South Africa for playing this one-off T20I to strengthen their relationship with them. This match was affected by Rain during the second innings and South Africa registered their only second T20I win over India.
Later India got off to a flying start scoring 71/0 off just 7.5 overs. Gambhir scored 28-ball 49. With Rain came in between, India were 12 runs behind D/L par score at the position.
7. October 2nd, 2012 (Colombo):
For the fourth time India-South Africa faced in World T20’s and three of them were marked as the last game of Super 8s. India needed a 30-run win for qualify to semis and South Africa were already ended their race.
India put on 152/6 on the board with help of contributions by middle order batsmen after winning the toss. Raina and Dhoni put on 40 off last 4 overs. India needed to restrict them to 121 to qualify.
India started well taking two early wickets. But a counter attack innings from Faf du Plessis watered over the India’s hopes. He smashed a 38-ball 65 and ensured India doesn’t qualify. At the end India managed to pick up a consolation win by 1 run.
